Hey Guys,

First post here. My father in law was a big festool fan and unfortunately passed away recently. I inherited all his tools and am just getting into woodworking,  but am having a few problems. More specifically with the ts55 plunge saw with cms system and the kapex ks 88.

The table saw simply isn't cutting square. The blade is 90 degrees to the table,  but wood is jamming up hard between the blade and the fence and is leaving burn marks on my wood.

With the kapex,  I have the dust extraction hooked up,  but the cuts aren't clean and throwing sawdust everywhere. It's splintering the wood.

I'm really a novice when it comes to these things and am struggling. I would absolutely love your feedback,  and would even welcome someone from Melbourne Australia to come around and help me out.

Thanks guys,

Ryan

First, [welcome] to the FOG!

Second, sorry to hear of the loss of your father-in-law. My sincere condolences.

Third, WONDERFUL to hear that you are taking up woodworking! And Festool is a fantastic base to start with.

It really DOES sound like a visit with a local Festoolians to speak with you about your issues and possible solutions would be best. I'm sure someone will jump in shortly....

Hi Vorpal

[welcome]to FOG

Sorry for your loss. I'll try and help you out if I'm understanding you correctly.

Table saw - The blade may be 90 degrees to the table but not neccessarily parallel to the fence. Unplug the table saw and measure the "front" and "back" of the blade to see if its parallel to the fence.

Kapex - Check on your vacuum if the suction dial is on maximum. It sits below the on/off switch. Also try disconnecting the hose altogether and see if there is anything stuck inside the hose.
As for splintering - IF the blade is blunt, this could happen. Also be aware of the speed at which you plunge through your work piece.

Hope this helps. If all esle fails - speak to your local shop. Most will be able to help- OR... Just keep asking here  [big grin]

Good luck

yeah, i agree with the blade may be dull (or not clean) and speed setting on the units.  also make sure you bring the blade up to full speed before plunging.
what type of wood are you working with?
perhaps also the wrong type of blade for the material you're cutting.  check the reference recommendations on festool's site or side of blade package.
a picture of your set up after a cut might make it easier to troubleshoot.

on the kapex side, in addition to setting the vac speed and checking for obstructions as has been suggested, make sure your vac bag is not overly full.

take advantage of the great supplemental manuals available for the machines on festool's site and go through and set things up from the beginning without making any assumptions--every woodworker does things, even the basics, just a bit differently.

welcome and enjoy the journey.

Hi Ryan,

  Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

I think we are slipping ....... eleven minutes for the first reply and nineteen for the second ........  [scared]

When you are checking alignment measurements find something that can measure very accurately. Maybe there are some specialized set up and measuring tools in your Father In Laws things for setting up table saws and such.

I can offer no help, but I am in Melbourne tonight and had a good feed at Movida with the niece.
