Need Info on Yuasa Drill Press Vise

I found a Yuasa 150mm Drill Press Vise that was used by my father-in-law as a general vise on his workbench and he changed the handle at one point.  It seems to work well and looks heavy duty (weighs a ton).  Is anyone familiar with this brand?  Despite the issue with the handle, I was considering hanging on to it for those times when I might need something a bit heavier duty for my drill press.

That'd make a real nice drill press vise Mike.  For that application weight is your friend.  [smile]

Hey [member=60461]Bob D.[/member] [member=44099]Cheese[/member] Thanks for the responses!  I guess I'll hang on to it.  Sure beats that cheapy little one I have.  I'm sure I can figure out a work around for the the handle issue.

[member=75217]squall_line[/member] Thanks for that info.  I was a little surprised when I saw it was made in Japan since anything else he has is pretty much all USA tools.  I know that vise is an old one and has been in his possession for more than 40 years.  I'll have to ask him where it came from.  He is currently in a nursing home and turned 100 this year.

What's wrong with the handle Mike?

Yost made drill press vises that look very similar to the Yuasa. I've got an older Heinrich and while it's heavy to move the weight is the secret for stability.

Hey [member=44099]Cheese[/member]  I believe it had a handle similar to this Winton.  If you look at my first picture, someone, presumably my FIL, cut off the original handle and drilled through the shaft to insert a rod similar to what most bench vises have.  My FIL was known for messing around with stuff like this!  [eek]

I looked at images of drill press vises and I guess there are quite a few that have the same rod arrangement as this.  The only difference is the rod on this one seems to be quite a bit longer so I was concerned that it might get in the way.  Since it's still at my FIL's garage, I haven't even tried to set it on my DP to see if there will be a problem.  At this point I'm thinking it may not matter.  I suppose I could cut the rod to shorten it if I had to.

BTW, I did get a chance to ask him about the origin of this vise, but he couldn't remember where he got it.  I'm  a lot younger and I often don't remember things from even a year ago!  LOL  I'm thinking it was surplus at one of the shops he worked for.

At any rate you convinced me this is a keeper!
