New 45 minute charger

There is a video of new charger and batteries on festool.com

Looks like t18 will finally get a proper fixed belt clip.

Looking forward to it.  Had the experience for the first time last week of batteries not charging after they'd been in use on the TSC55 -- had to wait for them to cool off and the red light to switch to green on the charging station.  Of course --  I was working out in the sun in 90degree+ temps.

I've got 5x 18v and 2x 15v batteries so I won't be buying the airstream until som of the lose their charging capacity, but it is a great improvement for those that demand cordless for heavy use full day, also you will get by with fewer batteries...

While it makes sense to actively cool the battery while charging (so you can push more energy into it per timeframe) I see the following downside of the airstream charger:

To (and I admit that this is speculation) never ever use it where you work.

Festool dust collection is great (but not 100%) so the charger will effectively turn the airstream batteries into fine-dust collectors.

In theory so could any charger with a fan built into it. However i have never had that sort of issue. But then my batteries are either charged at home, or in a room away from the dust making tools :)

Hi!

While I personally try to avoid charging batteries in the same room that I work/ make dust in, I'd hope that this aspect was taken into account somewhere during the designing/engineering process. After all, we're talking about tools for professionals that do site work and I guess it's not always guaranteed/possible that a charger can be placed in a dust free environment.

That said, I'm pretty sure that Bosch's 36V chargers are air cooled by a fan during charging - not sure if the air flows through their battery packs (probably not) - but I never heard/saw complaints about chargers that died from dust.

Then again, you could clean battery packs and charger every now and then with some compressed air - as you probably already do with the tools themselves.

Maybe we hear from Festool about it? It's an interesting question nonetheless for sure.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Hi
As soon as the UK microsite is ready I will post more detailed information. A video will be available shortly from the UK as well.

Hi!

Thank you Phil!

I found the German press release about the AIRSTREAM system:https://www.festool.de/Presse/Press...ilungen/AIRSTREAM_0916_DE_ohne Sperrfrist.pdf

It states that the air flows through an encapsulated cooling channel that runs between the battery pack's cells (I hope I translated that correctly)

So dust shouldn't be a problem, just as I thought, Festool did take this into account.  [thumbs up]

Kind regards,
Oliver

Gah! and all this a month after I go all-in on half a dozen 5.2's and an extra charger... typical.

Any information on compatibility? Will standard batteries still charge in the Airstream charger but slower? Or will the new batteries work in the old charger (at slower charge rate)?

Hate to have to drag an extra charger about...

Hi!

The new chargers are compatible with the "old" 12, 15 and 18V battery packs per Festool's press statement.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Compatible and able to charge faster might be two different things though.

Absolutely. It's my understanding that if you want to charge "old" battery packs faster you go for the new TCL-6 charger. If you use the new Airstream charger ASC 8 with "old" battery packs it will be just compatible. Like I said, just my understanding from the press statement. It's still possible that also the ASC-8 will charge "old" battery packs faster.

But at least we don't need to worry about compatibility, and that is what was asked :)

Kind regards,
Oliver
