I have no idea about finishing and I've got some DIY projects coming up so I'm looking for an inexpensive solution, if there is one, to tackle a wide range of projects.

Exterior paint to a roughcast wall, clear varnish or lacquer to interior doors and possibly emulsion to drywall.

I have a compressor here is the spec but I realise this is not likely to be of much use.

Motor Output: 2hp
Voltage/Phase: 230V - 1ph
Rated Supply: 13A
Air Displacement cfm(ltr/min): 7.3(205)
Maximum Free Air Delivery cfm(ltr/min): 5.1(145)
Maximum Pressure: 145psi/10bar
Receiver Capacity: 50ltr

Budget is up to £500 that's about $800 don't want to go over that and more than happy to spend less if an adequate solution can be found.

I was about to jump in and try and help, but then I noticed where you are from. I've travelled more of the world than most, but to say that I am clueless about Scotland would be an understatement.

I will be watching the answers to your posts, though, because I have a similar interest.

2hp compressor are not really good enough for most spray guns
But you can look for low cfm guns
I don't known what brand you have available
But here there are a couple guns that gives really good finish
Asturo 5008 WB.  And the CA Technology j100
Both are low cfm(6-7 cfm) and about $350-$450

I was thinking that the compressor wouldn't be much use and I'd need a turbine.

Shame on you Wow you should know about Scotland we gave you so much.

I have an old Earlex 5000 HVLP that hasn't been out of the box yet (!) so I'm by no means an expert user, but I *am* an expert researcher!

The quick tip is to start with understanding the finishes/paints you want to use as they'll dictate somewhat the kit you'll need.

For that sort of money, I'd be looking at Apollo or Fuji HVLP systems in the UK. 3-stage turbine probably if you are only spraying finishes, 4-stage if anything heavier like eggshells or interior painting.

The Fuji Q3 and Q4 are "quiet" but more expensive whilst some of the less expensive models like the Fuji Mini-Mite are louder but compare well for features.

I think there are a couple of UK guys on here that have the Fuji HVLP kits, so hopefully they'll be along soon, but hope this gives you a start to your research.

I have the Fuji Q4 and can highly recommend it having now sprayed various waterborne finishes with it. As Gary mentions above the Minit-Mite's are louder but have the same performance as "Q's".
It's supplied with a silver 1.3mm cap but you may need to add a larger one for exterior paints. You can see all the ones available at http://www.fujispray.com/parts-accessories/

For that range of product and budget I would always recommend a Graco Finish Pro or Easy Max. The Easy Max is on sale now, but it is designed for water based coatings.

Right machine, wrong budget. $800 will get a decent airless, though. But thats not the right machine.  [scared]

The Finish Pro (air assisted) IS the all around do it all sprayer. It costs about $2400.

Thanks for the correction.
