New Dewalt 735 planer deal

There has been some recent discussion of the board here about the Dewalt 735 planer.

Factory Authorized Outlet through their Ebay store has a VERY good deal on a new 735 planer bundled with an extra set of knives and the infeed/outfeed tables. Current price with free shipping is $450. This is about $120 less than the current best price online that I have seen.

Haven't done business with these folks but they seem to get good reviews. and they are a Dewalt dealer.

I've owned the Dewalt 735 planer for over 10 years and love it. With the infeed/outfeed table extensions set correctly (the outer edge just slightly above the inner edges), I get essentially no snipe; at least no noticeable snipe. The factory knives don't get great wear but, whether this is a problem for you or not will depend, to a large degree, on how frequently you use the planer and how you use it. If you want a planer that will take off 1/8" per pass initially on rough hardwood, I'd say get a 15" Powermatic, Jet, General, or . . . ? The Dewalt planer is a great planer for a hobbyist and I haven't had enough problems with the factory steel knives to consider spending the money to upgrade the cutter head to a helical head. Others feel differently. I rarely hear anything negative about the planer other than knife wear.

In summary, it's a great planer for a woodworker who doesn't do woodworking or cabinet work for a living. I have gotten the value I put into the planer for sure at this point and more. If the planer you referenced is truly a new, not used planer, it is a good deal. That is the price they sold for when I bought mine.

I also purchased this planer when it was first released for sale. Over the years it’s served me well except for the planer blade wear. It’s terrible...

I just received the Shelix cutter head for this planer and am excited to see what the differences are between it and the original soft steel blades as I have a lot of maple that needs to be thicknessed.

The original blades are definitely “last weeks left over bad news”.  If you purchase this planer, carbide blades are the minimum upgrade necessary.

If you upgrade to the Shelix, keep in mind that it does apparently use more power so you may have to upgrade your circuit.

I just received the Shelix cutter head for this planer and am excited to see what the differences are between it and the original soft steel blades as I have a lot of maple that needs to be thicknessed.

The Shelix head transforms the DW735.  Noise level is reduced by over 10db, surface finish is better (except for maybe the first 2 boards you previously ran on a freshly sharpened blade), sharpening and blade setting are a thing of the past and insert rotating will literally be years into your future unless you hit a nail.

FYI - MaxTool (which is also a Festool dealer) has a similar deal on the 735 with extra blades and tables.

I was himming and hawing about if I should get a planer and which one.  The extra discount just made the decision for me.

I'd love to get a big old Hammer/Laguna/Other spendy floor standing planer... but realistically for a diy/hobby guy in my garage I'm hoping the DeWalt 735 will give me decent results.

Good catch, now I see that ebay seller is also in Ontario, California.

I'm not a big fan of shopping on ebay - thought others might want to shop directly with the vendor.

I just got mine from them. Put it together and put it away. Tomorrow I will give it a test. So far it was very fast free shipping. I even called them just to speak to someone rather then buying online. box was in poor condition but other then that so far so good.
