New Festool Tools 2014

Just saw the prices for the new tools at my favorite Festool dealer and I can tell that I'm in no immediate need to even think of upgrading my ETS150/3 or Fein Multimaster to the Vecturo... Holy Smokes!

ETS 150/3 EQ-Plus retails @ 333€ vs.
ETS EC 150/3 EQ-Plus @ 571€

FEIN SuperCut Edition Wood FSC 2.0 Q in systainer retails @ 389€ vs.
Vecturo OS 400 EQ-Plus @ 473€ (Set with the plunge base 654€)

If I didn't have the Multimaster already the price difference to the Vecturo isn't that bad, but its not worth upgrading in my use - about once a year - but how the heck did the sander almost double in price over night!?!

Maybe they don't need abrasive sheets any more and just have a built in tractamorphic sanding face that can vary the grit size dynamically. [eek]

My dealer has the Vecturo for EUR 429, the set for 575 (565 for mailing subscribers  [tongue]).

The price for the sander is kinda shocking though. I really wonder what advantage it holds over the ETS 150/3 besides brush less motor and associated advantages.

The drawers are EUR 44, which makes me wonder what they offer above the much cheaper "high-end" Ikea maximera drawers.

Hi Coen

You need to try the new ETS to understand the huge step forward - not only is it lighter but it has brushless technology which has brought the form factor down and it is squatter. That means that it is very easy to handle and is far less likely to 'dip' as you move it around.

Peter

True,  but it's directly competing with the Mirka Deros and that costs £380.

I also think the sander is shockingly expensive. At first I wanted it, but at €571 that's not gonna happen. Even if it's a step forward, you shouldn't almost double the price of the existing model.

That the Rotex sanders are priced differently from the ETS sanders, I understand, they offer quite something extra. But this sander doesn't offer anything extra over the existing ETS150. The smaller formfactor is a minor convenience, not a whole new functionality. I sincerely doubt this sander is going to be a good seller at that price.

Hi Alex, Try using it all day and I guarantee that you will see the difference. In fact, try it for one hour and you will notice a huge difference.

I had a demo and sales pitch of the new sander a few weeks ago at a training day. It's squarely aimed at the automotive market where sanding is rarely done on a horizontal surface. The rep recommended to stick to the old model for woodworking as the extra weight will help with typical woodworking in a shop.

Hi Gippy

I too had a demo the other day and used the machine myself. As a woodworker of 45 years I can assure you and your rep that it is very much a machine for the woodworking (as well as the automotive) sector. It is sweet.

Peter, would you say based on your hands-on experience that the difference in cost between the two ETS models warrants the higher price for the new one?

I've not seen one in the flesh and would value your opinion on this one.

It may be, but here in Thailand the price will be well over $1,000. I'm putting that in the shockingly expensive category  [eek]

How about a thickness planer with integrated chip catcher ie dust deputy so the large pieces are removed prior to entering dust collector

Hehe, not doubting that at all. But I don't know if it's 270 euros worth sweeter than the current ETS.

Anyway, time will tell. Let's see how well it does over time. But unless price comes down I sincerely doubt it's gonna be a best-seller. If they put it at 350, it would sell like crazy. At 570.... ahem.

FFX now have the SYS-AZ drawers online, and decent prices too:

Set of 5 (500767) for £117 inc. VAT;
Individually (500692) for £29 each inc. VAT.

As a bonus, the multibuy discount means if you order more than one individual one, you get £4.50 discount off each of the additional ones (so 2 for £53.50, 3 for £78.00 etc.).

I've ordered a couple, so I can do a proper review of them when they arrive...  [big grin]

I have asked if I can borrow one for a review - if that happens then I will post a video very quickly. For now though let me reiterate what I took in from the demo - the new machine is exceptional and very nice to handle. It can not only be used one handed but the various controls can be accessed whilst it is running with that same hand. Also, unlike the Mirka that my friend has, the on/off button does not need to be kept pressed all of the time - press to start and press to stop.

Now I do not to know the whole of the sanding market but I have had all sorts of machines in my hands over the years. I really love my Rotex sanders but realise that I need to get into the more sophisticated fine finishing world offered by the ETS. I cannot afford one yet but the new machine is high on my wish list ( I just need to get Barack Obama to read my book !).

As there is no "electrical" component here, wonder why they are not yet available in NA. With the Festool "rule" I cannot order from the UK and ship to Canada... The wings would be another item I could use...

These are new products - it's not just a case of whether there's any electrical aspect, but it's also about production capacity. Festool simply doesn't have the capacity to produce enough of any new item to launch it in all markets simultaneously. I know people sometimes compare Festool with Apple, but not in this case! And even Apple stagger their releases in several stages, don't they?

I'm sure Festool would love to sell everything everywhere, but they don't have the infrastructure. Shane replied to a post about the Conturo earlier in this thread that pretty much sums this up:

Tell the rest of the world to stop buying so many of them and we'll get it sooner

Just my [2cents]

That's the best price for now - even with postage it adds up to 170€ less than ordering from Germany for 20 slides... Which unfortunately still adds up to 611€  [crying]

Local camera store has the Nikon 1 AW1 on sale for 499€ with the kit lens and adventure pack... Decisions, decisions...

Save up for the D810 with 24-70, 70-200 and 14-24 (or 16-35 if you like filters)  :-*

I was looking at the covered extraction hose. Does anyone have any information on what the cover material is made of?  It appears to be a nylon based material but I'm not sure. Any clues or has anyone had any first hand experience with one yet?

Thanks

Karl

The new D750 looks like a good piece of kit.

Peter

Not if you're used to semi-pro button layout. D750 is short half a dozen. And it's size and format differs from D810 as well.

That's what shooting with a D90 is so hard for me. I'm used to D300 buttons. With less buttons, they either get double functions or you need to go into the menu all the time.
