If you get a chance check out FastCaps Youtube page. My friend Paul is flying the same drone. Well not at the moment because he totaled his yesterday AM and has a new one on order.
I have never flown one before so this was the first time.

I went looking at the website and then some more google searches and it seems that drone has many packages and also a lot of aftermarket stuff that brings the packages into the multi thousand range - (4 to 10K)
What exact package did you get and where did you get it?
When you release the controls it does stop at a controlled hover, conrrect?
That model has what they say is "IOC". Were you using that which allows you to have incredible stabilization and also controlled movements?
I ask this because I just picked a new replacement starter type drone that doesn't have any of these capabilities and I have stupid thumbs. i.e. the word replacement.
I here that is a great model. I am looking forward to what the Parrot Bebop will be like when it is released later this year. Maybe it will have a get out of the tree mode.

He flew it out of range. When it loses connectivity to the controller it raises to 60' and will fly back to you and land where you took off. Unfortunately the trees around his house were in excess of 60'.

Its a Vision 2+ and they sell for $1299.
Yes, I can lay the controller down and it will fly assuming it has GPS lock. It will maintain elevation and fly based on onboard altimeter and flight computers even without GPS but will drift around with the wind. Once it has 6 satellites it will stay in the same spot even if the wind blows it around.
I took off into the sun and as you can see I had to walk around to even find the drone. Elevation is my friend so I just pulled up on the stick to get about the trees and then took my time to get repositioned so I could see it. It was flying itself at that point.
Just to give you an idea of what is going on. The controller has a clip to mount your smart phone. It also has a wifi extender on it. So you start wifi on your phone and look for the Phantom access point and connect. When you do the drone starts streaming back to your phone so you can fly the thing out of site via the phone display (FPV). From there you can also start to record and take single photos. You don't need to run wifi but thats how it streams video back. The camera also has a micro SD card for the real HD footage.
The software has an option to use the gyro in your phone if you chose that allows you to tip the controller (phone attached) and it will rotate the gimbal on the camera. When you are in FPV mode it keeps the camera forward so you can fly it.
Fighting sun and first flight I really did not know what I was doing with the camera !
The new vision plus has a new camera with nice gimbal and shock mounts that keep the video smooth and removes the jello effect.
I am a newbie at this but if you have questions that I can answer I will be happy too.

Thanks! When I get a better model I will also be looking for the feature that automatically corrects the controller on the way back. LOL.

It's really not the same thing. I used to fly rc helis too, back in the days when you had to *fly* them, rather than just telling them where you wanted it to go. One (mechanical) gyro was all I had, not the multitude of digital gyros and accelerometers these drones have.

On a related note, I found this posted on my facebook wall today. A guy in Florida flew his quadcopter into a firework display. Don't watch this embedded, watch it on youtube in full HD. Some truly awesome shots:

There has been some controversy about him flying the drone into the fireworks. I can't verify this, but I have heard that he is being fined $40,000 for this. The Coast Guard didn't approve this, nor did the FAA. Since the rules regarding drones are still being determined, the use of them is still pretty much up in the air (no pun intended). The danger of a ricochet off of the drone could have sent the errant explosive charge down into the crowd or into the area where the fireworks were being launched, with serious injuries or death resulting if this had happened.
I visit an aviation photography thread quite often and there have been some discussions about drones and the fireworks issue. Here its the link to the thread.
