Hello from Kansas!
After reading this forum for months I thought it was time to join, introduce myself and say thanks. I have greatly enjoyed reading your posts and learning from your varied experience.

My name is Rod. I do complete custom car interiors in show cars, street rods, muscle cars and pro touring cars. Usually, the customer brings an empty vehicle to my shop and everything gets built from scratch. Fit and finish are the rule here. A top priority in every job. I have been doing upholstery work since 1985. Learning is a life-long achievement goal. I believe when you think you know everything there is to know, you know nothing at all.

I am a tool junkie. Wanting the best is a constant. I am changing the shop over to Festool. Last year I made a significant purchase and this year my list is even longer. So far I have a CT-36, TS-55, couple of guide rails, OF1400, MFK-700, RO-90, RO-150, PSB-300, MFT/3 and assorted sustainers.

I am thrilled with the accuracy of my new tools. I should have been here years ago. My wife liked Festools long before I saw the need. However, now we are preparing to take our business mobile and the lighter weights and compact sizes make sense. I plan to have a full Festool shop in a trailer. I couldn't do that any other way. We are selling our house, moving into a Prevost bus full time and looking for adventure. Our customers are excited to have us come to them and we will finally get to travel.

We are in the process of remodeling our house to get it ready to sell. I will be doing lots of trim work and building new kitchen cabinets. Probably will have a few questions as I go.  And if any of you have any upholstery related questions I will do my best to help.

Rod

Hi Ron!  Welcome!  It should be a cool project doing a really big bus!  I don't think we have ever had a bus remodel here.  We do have some members who have experience with boats who might be able to offer ideas if you run into problems, but I assure you that we will all be interested to see how you progress and will be standing by to offer any help we can.

about a bus,I lived in one for 18 years, everybody has a opinion, nobody is middle ground, they love the idea or hate you for eyesoreing up the area.no matter what you look like or  how much you have spent on your ride,or dont spend, with the prevost, you will not be be slumming it .you will be obviosly be discriminated or welcomed. you will really learn about people.the best thing to remember for ease ,is private property and if you are on public property, you are not breaking the law until you lie your head to the pillow( unless it is in a campground). camping is legally defined many ways.find out your states definition

Welcome Rod!

Sounds like an interesting adventure.  You should start a blog.  I am sure many people will be interested in what you are doing in the Prevost during the outfit and after you get on the road.

Welcome rod

Do you have any pictures of your work to share ?  I have been interested in upholstery for a long time but wouldn't know where to start.  I used to watch programes like American hot rod & West Coast Customs just to watch the interior guys do their thing.  I wanted to do things like dinning chairs, bed headboards etc with big padding & stitched back lines (don't know what you call it) & stuff like that but I can't seem to find anything on YouTube.

I might be pestering you for tips  ;D

Woodguy.

You might be the first to ever make that statement on this forum.  Frame it and put it on your wall!

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Sorry for the confusion. I need to clarify I am not converting a bus. We are buying a converted bus to live in full time. I am remodeling our house prepping it to sell. But I will be working on buses in the future. Went to a bus rally and as soon as they found out what we do, it caused a stir. I will continue to do cars and will work into doing more buses. It's all about a simpler life for us.

If you would like to see some of our work, you can go to this site:

Woodguy.....Once we get on the road maybe I will swing by.

Beautiful interiors, Stitches!  Welcome to FOG

I assume you are doing all the stitching in the leather???  And the finishing of the hides???

neil

Neil, we order hides from various vendors. They are available in many different finishes. We then cut and sew the covers for the seats, door panels, headliner, etc.
Probably about 50% of our interiors are leather. The rest are done in vinyl. Vinyl saves the customer money and these days, vinyls are really nice.

Just saw your post.  I'm in NW KS and there is a car show coming up 9/7/13 in Hill City.  [cool]

Rod... really?  gotta be a stage name right?  way to perfect for a guy who works on "hot ROD'S" all day  [big grin]

[welcome] to FOG, i took a few minutes to browse over some of your pictures over coffee this morning and ive gotta say you have some serious talent!

the '32 ford roadster has got an awesome looking leather, it fits the look of the car so well. also really love the door pocket and the battery cover. do  you build things like the battery cover?

question about the R8, were you able to just re-stitch the original leather or does that require all new leather?

cant wait to spend some more time browsing through your work!
