We lost a beautiful shaggy hickory last fall in the PA hurricane.  I had enough to mill, kill dry, and build my wife a new kitchen. (About 500 bdft!!) Doors are all solid.  Used the T-55 to breakdown all the 5/4 stock for glue up.  It worked great!

That is a nice job. I totally enjoy seeing the sapwood through out the cabinets.
Awesome Work

Thanks Sal.  I had mixed responses from various people when designing the project.  They either loved or hated the hickory.  One Real Estate agent told me it was the hottest wood in our area.  It is very warm, especially when compared to another favorite, oak.  Thanks for your kind remarks.

That is a beautiful kitchen. I ve not really come across hickory in the timber yards in the uk. How is it to work?
The finish that you ve got on it is 1st class.
Also, are the cabinets made of hickory aswell?

I like hickory and where I grew up it was a preferred wood.  Dang hard on tools but nice.

Hickory is hard,very hard. :)

Hickory is EXTREMELY hard to work...as in hard material AND difficult to work.  It chips and tears out very quickly.  It destroys blades by dulling them very quickly as well.  After a while, I learned how to keep a step ahead of that issue.  The boxes themselves are 3/4 ply and the backs are 1/2 ply.  All the faceframes, door and drawer fronts are solid hickory.  I sealed it with tung oil, stained it with cherry stain and finished it with HP Urethane.  I initially dyed the wood to even out the colors, but it made the wood too dark.

That kitchen really looks great.  Cherry is my favorite wood, and I really like seeing sapwood in the finished product.  To me, it adds the joy of natural imperfection, something that homogenized factories just can't churn out.  Well done!!!

Beautiful, I made my kitchen out of pecan/hickory..I love it..

What type of did you use

Beautiful work!  Personally I like the sapwood and knots and things...I think it adds character and lets the true beauty of the wood come through.  Nice job!

Sancho57,
You asked "what type..."  but did not clarify what type of "what"....what was your original question?

We were going to use cherry, but the hurricane brought us the hickory.  BTW, I had a gorgeous red oak come down in that same hurricane, and I got around 250 bdft of 14 ft. sections of 5/4 clear oak.  It would make a great stain grade stair case somewhere.  We dried it, as well.

Absolutely fantastic work!  Love the hickory and all it's imperfections don't listen to what others say.  You did a yeomen's job!
