The new 18v Makita drill and impact driver standout to me for two reasons. 
1. They are about the size of current 12v drills and impact drivers.
2. They are very light weight for pro level 18v tools.

I hope Festool is paying attention.

The black and white are an anniversary release for the company.  I have used their teal colored version for years as an impact driver and they are a brilliant workhorse.  The black and white usually sell with a lower capacity battery, but essentially have the same specifications.  I think Makita refer to the anniversary model as their "compact" version - albeit they are the same size.

I have heard from a reliable source that this new model is tiny, especially for 18v.  And they are brushless.

The Milwaukee M12 impact produces roughly the same amount of torque as the tiny Makita 18v version. Owning the Makita 2.0ah batteries, I would say the Milwaukee M12 is the desirable unit to get, as it is quite small with the 2.0ah battery that it comes with. They also now offer a 3.0ah battery, and a larger 6.0ah battery.

I loved my Makita twin set .18v with full metal chuck and the impact pushed just about anything into wood . Batteries etc where great
etc.One of the best "site" twin sets going .But i tend to change things often , before they get to old and lose too much of their value etc.This time I opted for the same type set up but Dewalt .Again the best twin set up, no plastic chuck etc.  Far superior  ! better control and the batteries go for ever . I dont like the cheaper makita stuff at all .

Makita is planning on discontinuing there 12v line, and these are the replacements. They want anything cordless to be able to run on the same batteries. This is also why there new 36v system runs two 18v batteries. They seem nice, and are very small.

Are you sure? They came out with 12v slide rail batteries/tools not long ago.

The driver is okay but the impact is so small and powrfull really impressed.  Not to sure if ill ever use the T function on the impact drill not had chance to test it out.
