I just wanted to drop a quick hello out to the members here. Last weekend I bought my first Festools. The CT Mini and OF-1010 combo.

I was at Woodcraft and they were having a Festool day. I had been waffling on the 1010 for a while now as I don't like the plunge on my Freud and usually just keep it in the table but it was tough to justify the expense of the 1010 over say a Bosch. So anyway I was watching the guy doing demos and asked if I could see the 1010 in action. He set it up with a 1/4" round over bit and free hand routed all the way around a piece! When I say freehand, I mean he held the piece in one hand and the router in the other and it took him about 20 seconds to round over a piece 18" x 6" all the way around and the vac caught about 70% of the dust which was pretty impressive. Then he took a longer piece of walnut that was about 3' and clamped that in place and put the dust catcher on. It was able to catch somewhere around 85 - 90 % off the dust. Then he let me give it a go. Wow! I've never felt a router this comfortable or as friendly to work with  and the dust collection is just stellar.

See, I just got done a few weeks before making a bunch of drawers for my kitchen using the PC dovetail jig and my Freud router. I had to do them in the driveway and wear basically full "armor" while using it (breather, goggles, gloves, apron, etc) and was covered with sawdust when I was done and of course wind blew a lot into the garage anyway so I spent the next few days cleaning up. She said I was dragging sawdust around every time I came in too. She said anything that helped stop that was worth it...

But even still I was waffling on the price when my wife just said to the demo guy, "put it on the counter, we'll take it." Who am I to argue :)

They didn't have the CT mini in stock so they ordered one for me and gave me the demo to take home so I could test it out and see if I liked it. That was awesome to me. Never had that happen before.

I was away on business this week so I'm hoping to get some play time in the next few days to see how I like my purchase. I'm contemplating getting the CT Midi rather then the Mini now that I am thinking about it but I need to route some stuff and see how full the bag gets. I don't want to be changing bags daily because they are pricey too but I like the size of the Mini. I've got a few more weeks on my 30 day return policy so I'll play a bit and see how it goes.

So like I said, resistance was futile  [big grin]

Let the assimilation begin...

Hey Jim, Welcome to the forum.  Have fun with your new purchase.  A dust deputy will save you on bags.  Festools rock.

Welcome Jim, looking forward to seeing how you use your new toys tools.

Just one question - does that wonderful wife of yours have a sister?  [big grin]

Jim      [welcome]  to FOG and the world of Festool    Enjoy your new goodies and this forum as well

Welcome to the FOG, Jim.  Some advice, don't route while holding the piece in your hand, if you like your hand that is.  Clamp it to a work surface.  Stay safe and enjoy many years with your tools!

Welcome.
Once you start using 1010 on your next project you'll think, "jeesh, I wonder if the other tools are this good?"

Luckily all my festools are hidden away at the shop so the woman wont find out for a long time. And when she does the conversation will be "oh i found that used for like $100"....what she doesn't know cant hurt her i figure.

Hi Jim,

[welcome]  to the FOG!

If you find that the Mini is too small, you may want to consider just jumping to the CT26.

Enjoy the tools (I know you will) and better start saving now because once you have one Festool you will want another and another and another.................  ;D

Yes but her sister is married already :) that's OK though because she's not nearly as understanding as my wife is LOL!

Yeah, I was amazed that the demo guy did that and there was another guy there watching and we both said the exact same thing.

I thought about that but the price difference is significant between the upgrade to the midi and the upgrade to the CT26. I may just keep the mini if it works out OK and put the CT36 on my wish list if I get some bigger tools like the OF2200 or a TS75. My shop is only 10x10 and is pretty full so smaller is better at the moment anyway. The midi is just a little taller so that's not a big deal, the CT26 or 36 are bigger all the way around...

I actually have a dust deputy for my 16gal ridgid vac I'll have to see if I can adapt that for the smaller hose of the CT...

You're not kidding. I picked up the catalog and found maybe 8 more things that look very useful (MFT/3, TS55, tracks, ETS125, etc) As need and circumstance permit I will have to check out what's available.

Thanks for the warm welcome...

One of the blessings of them coming in identical Systainers is that until she starts counting them, they can be successfully hidden in plain sight.  [smile]

that is until they start stacking up. Problem is she knows Festool is high end, I should learn to shut my mouth more.
