Now Taking Orders, Self Centering Guide for Domino

Hi-

Does the Self Centering Guide Stop work with Domino XL too?

Kind thoughts-

Christopher

Yes, Christopher it does work with all versions of the Domino joiner. I have the Domino XL in my shop, so I can attest to this.

Forgive me for for raining on the parade of accolades, but after all these years since purchase, I have to say the self centering unit is a beautiful piece of machining but falls short in use; it's really little more than a pretty face. But as zapdafish asks "Doesn't this do the same thing as the trim stop attachment that comes with the Domino?". The advantages are negated by the minimal ⅝" protrusion of the two tabs around the workpiece while the one that comes with the tool, while being less elegant in appearance, does ride along about 3 inches of stock making for far greater accuracy and ease of control. Sadly I give this a One Star rating, regretting I purchased it.

I have not had any experience with the self centering jig, and wonder how other users feel about the one star rating. After 7 years in the market, someone must be able to share if in practice it is indeed far better than the trim stop. I am happy with the trim stop.

I handled the MSG but did not find it a useful jig at all, so I passed when someone offered me his at a very good price. I could not think of a project in which it would meaningfully help my work.

What one star rating?

I have both the trim stop and the self centring jig. I virtually never use the trim stop as you can't guide from a single side with the Trim stop

Did you read the woodwrek's post? He gave the product a one-star rating.
I thought there was some significant number of users rather than a single subjective opinion.

I'm sure that woodwrek can sell his unit on for a significant percentage of his purchase price.

Some people like one system that others don't. Personally I like the fact that the SGC-10 can be used in a similar, but adjustable, way as the pins/paddle stops something that the trim stop can not do.
YMMV

Single or not, his user experience sounded legit. So far no other users have commented about his specific protrusion remark, which I was hoping other owners could some shed some light on.

No, he was debunked as a troll. The discussion is in another thread.

But what difference does it make? I'm not producing the guides any more.

I wasn't aware of the thread that you mentioned about Woodreck being found to be troll. If he were, does Festool Forum have any policy on trolls.

The protrusion is virtually identical to that of the pins/paddles. As such, including the fact that they can be retracted, the SGC-10 is very much more versatile than the trim stop.

If you need to make a lot of domino slots in the end grain of many identical widths of face frames, for example, then the trim stop can be the better choice. If however you need to mortise both stiles and rails the SGC-10 is an infinitely better choice.

The trim stop is not self centring so it's easy to get the offset wrong.

However as it's not in production you would have to get a used one, so what is the real purpose to your enquiry?

as a seasoned user of the domino joiner, I study all DJ applications, jigs, products and comments found in this forum or elsewhere. Such curiosity and study have helped me master the domino joiner in my work. Whether the products or jigs are for sale, or are commercial (discontinued or not) are irrelevant to me. We can also learn from a single user experience as number per se may have little significance.
