OBSOLETE - Cannot upload a photo right side up

Everyone,

I've been trying unsuccessfully to upload a profile photo. It was not taken in landscape mode, and no matter how I orient it prior to uploading, the result is (seemingly randomly) anything but vertical. I'm sure I'm missing something pretty basic but I hope someone can offer some good advice.

Thanks,
Rob

See PM, and try resizing to a much smaller size.

The forum software doesn't observe all the metadata in images correctly and as a consequence, photos that look fine elsewhere end up getting rotated on the forum. It happens most to me with photos from my iPhone. What I have to do is open the photos on the Mac or PC, edit *something* on them (usually just add a small black dot in a black area) and save them. That process, for whatever reason, appears to update the orientation information in a way that the forum software understands.

It's been a problem for a long time and Shane did at one point implement a "fix" on the forum software, but it broke other things and was removed. I've just been living with it since.

Importantly, it's not you, it's everyone!

Like Garry said, I had lots and lots of issues with that in the past until I implemented a strict saving/downsizing regimen.

I'll take all photos with my iPhone rather than the camera which yields a much too large 5600 x 3700 image.

I send them to my MB Pro and if they arrive in the correct orientation, I'll rotate them 90º, rotate 90º, rotate 90º and finally rotate 90º and then save them to a smaller size 2000 x 1500.

If the photos arrive at my MB Pro in the incorrect orientation, then I just rotate them until correct and again save to 2000 x 1500.

The rotating and saving process brings the data back into proper alignment while the downsizing makes the forum software happy.

I have an iPad and have discovered that on one of the forums I post pictures to the orientation issue went away when I took the picture with the home button on top when taking a picture vertically and on the right hand side when in landscape orientation. With that said, I have posted pictures on other websites with no orientation issues regardless of the position of the home button when taking the picture.

When someone contacts me privately and asks for help with images I usually ask about the device it was taken on.  The iPhone is the most popular device that causes an issue.

My suggestion for iPhone users would be to always shoot in landscape and with the home button area (I say area because the home button doesn't exist on some phones) oriented to the right.

Also shrink your images.

This exactly as some others have posted before.

Peter
