To many fog members seem to be going towards thumbnail pictures. Got nothing against it apart from I don't bother looking at them. I might look at one of the 2 or more pictures but that's it.

Maybe because I'm to lazy but it takes far to long for the images to go full size on my.... iPad, iPhone, iMac tried all of them all with same results.

Sometimes I press to enlarge and nothing happens so I press again. This does my head in so from now on I personally won't be looking at thumbnail pictures unless I can tell from the smaller picture its going to be an interesting project or when reading the post it requires me to look at the picture to understand but ill be very reluctant to do so.

It's easy to attach [ attachimg=#] this code to make the pictures full size. It saves the need to enlarge the images after.

Cheers

Can take ages to load - start tapping my fingers and getting twitchy.

Richard.

I also find they load slow, and I'm on a desktop with 20 Mbit download speed.

Then again, I'm not for or against them, if people want to use them, fine by me, if people don't want to look at them, also fine by me. Suit yourself.

I used to like the thumbnails back in the days when t'interweb was a bit slower. Then you didn't have to wait ages for the full pictures to load if you didn't want to look at them.

Nowadays speeds are a lot better & it's no longer an issue, but unfortunately I got into the habit of using thumbnails, so I'm probably one of the people who annoy you! [tongue]

Got to get used to putting full-size images on I think.

PS - I have the same problem as you on the Ipad or my phone. You click on a thumbnail, nothing happens. So you click again. A couple of seconds later, the images flashes large for 1/2 second, then shrinks again! Repeat until you get too peed off to carry on...

Yeah not saying people must change but I was pretty sure others must feel same as me and I was just letting people know I for one won't be bothering to look at their projects in thumbnail form.  I'm not moaning just saying.

Some posters might not know people like me might be having this problem so just letting them know.

I don't know why it's so slow and like said, you click click click and it goes big then small again really annoying.

It's okay for one picture but if the OP posted 5 pictures or more and you gotta go through all 5 it does your head in.

I have in the past only ever looked at one/two pictures max in thumbnail and left the rest  but I'm finding more and more people are posting thumbnail form.

As someone who has regularly and HAPPILY helped members over the years with issues of image insertion I want to my less than 2 cents worth.

When this forum format came to be there wasn't support for images.  That came to be and guidelines were suggested and honestly good advice was given regarding file types and viewing qualities that could make images come to life here.  Not that long ago the forum software was updated and installed after waiting for the platform to become stable and one of the "improved" features was the ability of members to attach images of larger file sizes and then rely on the software to make adjustments rather than the end user doing it.

I am not a computer guru, but I think that the full size file is uploaded into the database and when someone clicks on the thumbnail or smaller image then the software will do it's thing to make the image bigger on the screen included any resizing, etc.  That results in slower load times because of the processing and sometimes I think that the software defaults to inserting thumbnails into posts versus full size images no matter what insert type is chosen if the file size is large.

I have issues with the system all the time, but I attribute that to my now-considered old browser.  But I can tell you that when I try to troubleshoot image posting issues for members what I see on my screen is different than it used to be and there have been times I couldn't help.

I continue to handle my images as I have always done and my images end of being less that 150KB versus many of the huge files uploaded. I typically insert mine full size.

I think you're right about the huge file size being the culprit.  I'll admit I find it frustrating that people can't handle something as simple as resizing images.  It drives me crazy to have to use the scroll bars to see huge picture uploaded full size, or wait for it load from a thumbnail.

Could the forum image back-end be configured to automatically resize incoming images to something sane like 1280 pixels on the long edge regardless of input and then just do away with the thumbnail option if it bothers people?

I personally prefer using the thumbnail option since that way one can actually read my message text without being overwhelmed by large pictures loading, but I don't have a strong enough opinion one way or the other that removing thumb-nailing would make me angry though...  [wink]

If there is one thing that bugs the heck out of me is pictures posted as links to external services like flickr or photobucket that jump out into safari on my iphone/ipad and lack any sane navigation methods on a touch screen.

i use thumnails because it annoys me when it takes ages to load big pics.
i usually find that when i open a thread that has full size pics i have to wait for all the pics to load and push the text below down , otherwise i start reading and then the post disapears down  the screen. total nightmare
i like thumnails because i can leave the pics small when load the thread .

i have to admit that if there is more than 2-3 thumnails i only look at them small and see if there is any reason to enlarge them

I like the thumbnails for two reasons.

1.  It prevents long load times if I'm on a mobile device
2.  If I've already read the beginning of the post I can scroll down to the unread portion more quickly than with a bunch of large pictures.

How about an option at the top of each post, "Enlarge all pictures"?  Then we could have the benefits of thumbnails, and a quick way of enlarging all the thumbnails in a given post.

Great idea, but I imagine that would require custom programming.

He is always on the FOG so...  [big grin]

I have found the perfect resize for the screen to avoid having to scroll to be about 800 pixels on the long edge.

There are shortcomings with the forum's software as it pertains to image handling. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about it currently so we're kinda stuck with what we have.  [sad]

Wish I had better news, but that's just something we have to live with right now.
