Esteemed Festoollians and router masters,

I've just started using my 1010 router and am finding that it gets pretty hot on the top after a bit of use. Am not unduly worried about this, but as a router virgin I wondered if this is to be expected or if I should call the fire brigade?

Thanks,
Mac

Others will give a better detailed answer but I'm willing to bet you have the same problem I had with my RO125.  It needs to be worked in.  After it's worked in you shouldn't have that problem anymore.  I've never had that problem with my OF1400.  With my RO125 I could barely hold onto it because it got so hot and it turns out that others had this problem and it's because of something that has to do with the brushes and electrical current thats arching back and fourth.

I'm by no means a router master, but my 1010 got pretty warm as well.  As with the RO125 mentioned below, it just needed breaking in.  A half day of routing dovetails did that.  Enjoy your 1010.

Boy, I'm having a hard time keeping this reply clean what with a straight line involving "virgin" and "hot", but I'll try. :D

Not to worry, I find that Festools in general run a little warmer than say DeWalt.  Never has been a problem with me and I have had my OF1400 running all day long routing out dovetails (do check that vac bag every now and then if you do that - it will fill up like a brick!).

Jesse, you did very well at keeping it sensible...bravo! Wait til I ask about oiling the plunge shafts.

Thanks for this feedback guys, I feel ok about it now. I'll let you know if it gets worse after longer sessions (easy, Jesse...) or eases off.

Cheers,
mac

In my experience, woodworkers new to router use have a tendency to force the router and not let the cutter work through the material at its own pace. This usually results in dulling the cutter (due to overheating) and also cuasing the tool to run hot. I would not worry about router, I have put these tools through the mill for years and they have never let me down.
