OF 1010

Hey guys,
Since there is a current promo, I was thinking about an OF 1010. However, I already have an OF 1400, two 1617s, a colt and a PC 7518 that lives in a table.  I build furniture and remodel most days. I like the weight and size of the OF 1010 compared to the OF 1400 but I own only a few 1/4” bits...

any opinions regarding the OF 1010?

I own all the FT routers and the 1010 is the one I use the most.  Like the light weight, ergonomics, as well as the range of attachments that are available for it.  I use mostly 1/4" bits.

Looks like you are already 'routered up' with your varied router ownership, so what about the 1010 is appealing to you to add to the tools you own?

I like the size and weight of it.  The 1400 is a great overall router, but I think the 1010 is a bit more maneuverable.  However I would have to purchase a few bits for it.

Ultimately you like the router and find it worth the price and always in use?

I like it a lot.  I think it has the best balance and give great control.  I use it for dados, chamfers, round-overs, dovetails, finger joints.  I also have the 32mm rail and accessories which it really works well with.

Sounds great.  That is what I intend to use it for as well.  I like the 1400 and it does everything that I ask of it but for some jobs it can be a bit cumbersome, top heavy.  I like to use the 1617s for the Leigh D4R.  I think the plunge function with the guide bush is more awkward than it needs to be, but the Festool motor is a lot smoother than the Bosch.  Glad to hear you are having success with the 1010, maybe I will be as fortunate.  Thanks for taking the time.

I would like to find an excuse for the OF 2200.

I started with the 1010 (both freehand and CMS use) and now (~4 years later) got me an additional 1400.

Things I like about the 1400 in comparison: tool change is faster (as of the ratchet and more room to access the bit), dust extraction handling is way better (click-on with lock lever), clicking fine depth adjuster (can be actuated by ear), better fence (as it already has a fine adjust integrated), bigger base, tool-free quick lock for the copy rings (no need to remove the bit to insert the centering gadget into the collet and to find a screwdriver), double clamp for height lock (less flex), a bit more stable as of the slightly higher mass.

What I absolutely hate about the two when together: incompatible accessories as of different rod spacing.

As you already have the 1400 and like it... you might be a bit disappointed by the 1010 (as of reasons above), especially as you're already seem to be set for flushing edge band, rounding edges (...) with the other routers you have.

Don't want to talk down the 1010, it's a fine little router - but compared to the 1400 it dosn't impress me that much (was just budget constrained back then). I'll setup my 1010 for flush trims (with WA-OF and UP-OF) and switch to the 1400 for the rest as that one is way quicker to retool (especially as of the flimsy dust port/cover on the 1010).

Heard understood acknowledged.  I was wanting to replace my colt for hinge work and quick small stuff but I forgot about the non-ratcheting collet.  That’s a real nice feature on the 1400.  Thanks for the response.

I have the 700, 1010 & the 1400. I use the 1010 more than the other 2 routers combined.
I had a pile of 1/2” router bits because of also owning 3 Milwaukee routers, thus I purchased the 1400 first so I could utilize the bits I already owned. Nice router, but once I used and purchased the 1010, I started to purchase new 1/4” & 8mm bits just so that I could use the 1010 more often. Now armed with the smaller sized bits, it’s my go-to router.

The ratchet on the 1400 is nice but not a game changer for me. The 2 items I do like better on the 1400 are the copy rings and the table extender. A table extender was available for the 1010 but has been discontinued. Gregor’s right, the edge guide is nicer on the 1400, but I went to a Micro Fence edge guide that can be swapped between the Festool routers and that solved that issue.

Whiteside has a few.

Lee Valley has a decent selection, made in Taiwan, but I cannot find much comparing these to other brands.

I started with an Elu 96 for about 40 years then added an OF1400 then the MFK700, a Trend T11, Macktec MT360 and a Makita 3709. [scared]

Whiteside has a few.

I can’t locate the receipt, however I think I’m purchasing them from Amazon.de. Genuine Festool
router bits and they’re delivered within 3-4 days...faster service than when ordered within the US...go figure.

As no one has mentioned it yet, I will just add that the 1010 operates brilliantly with the horizontal edging plate:https://www.festoolproducts.com/festool-486058-edging-plate-of-1010-and-of-1400.html

This lets you tackle basically any edging application you want to throw at it.  The edging plate will also work on the 1400, though generally I've found the setup a bit unwieldy compared to how it works on the 1010.

Festool unfortunately doesn't bundle the plate together with the angle arm and dust shroud, which have to be bought together with the plate to make it functional, so you are looking at appx.  another $160 to enable this feature of the router.

For myself, when I face a task that is within the capabilities of both the 1400 and the 1010, I almost always reach for the 1010 first, since I like its compact size and feel.  And I have never felt it to be underpowered when operating edge forming bits at the upper end of the 1/4" shank capacity.

Another possible source is CMT. They offer a complete selection of 6mm & 8mm router bits from their European Catalog. Perhaps the local CMT distributor will allow special orders. I haven't chased that option down yet because so far Whiteside and Amazon.de have worked out well.

1/4” shanks are fine until you want to make deep mortises more than 5/16” wide.

I collect routers... As a result I came to Festool routers late. Got a 1400 'cause I have a bunch of 1/2" bits and it seemed like a good compromise. But it doesn't integrate with the LR-32 stuff as well as the 1010 and I often find the 1400 to be "bigger than I need for the job." Wish I'd started with the 1010, I might not have gotten the 1400.

I just got my OF 1010 and my only real complaint is the oval shaped dust port makes it feel like I'm stressing the end of the vac hose when I push it on, I'm afraid of breaking the hose.

Just place the hose on the 1010, it’ll be fine.  [big grin]

It’s weird at first but it still works well.

I just got my OF 1010 and my only real complaint is the oval shaped dust port makes it feel like I'm stressing the end of the vac hose when I push it on, I'm afraid of breaking the hose.

There's a video somewhere showing how to install it easily.  You basically squeeze the hose end to ovalize it, start it on one of the smaller/sharper radii, then twist the hose as you push it around the remainder of the dust port.
