OF 1400 guide rail stop vs. edge guide

I just purchased a OF 1400, and have considered purchasing the guide rail stop and the edge guide.  Before I purchase either, I had a question.  If I use a rail and the guide stop, would I even have a need for the edge guide?  I'm not seeing how the edge guide could do anything that the guide stop could do as long as I had the rail.  Am I wrong?  Any input is appreciated!

If you have a number of cuts to make that require the same placement on each piece the edge guide will be much more accurate and quick to set up than trying to get the rail is same location on each piece.  If you want to rout parallel to an edge the edge guide is also best.

I use the stop in conjunction with the edge guide when I'm profiling an edge. The stop goes on the other end of the rods, and acts as an eccentric base of sorts, to help stabilize the router.

The edge guide is what it says... it works along edges. The rail stops allow you to run the router using the rail, which can be laid down pretty much anywhere, at any angle, as far into a board as you care to. But I wouldn't use it on the edge because it's even less stable than running the router flat on the board with the edge guide.

They do similar things... sometimes.

one thing that i prefer using the rail over the edge guide is when you are using a bearing less bit like window sill profile or a bead profile is that once the bit passes through the material it takes a little bit of the support out and can skew the edge guide, and i have never tried to use the guide to confirm this but i would think that the rail would provide a little bit more of stability, also  a lot of times i get asked to make custom grills in base moulding where a register is under a cabinet or in the wall and the guide rail allows me to route slots in easily without the hassle of setting up dado blades on my table saw, at the same time you can do this with the edge guide as well.

Justed Purchased the OF 1400 router. At the same time I purchased the guide rail stop. Does the guide rail stop come with the rods? or are the rods ordered separately? When I picked up the OF 1400 router there were no rods in the systainer.

Thats what I though.

The rods were part of the edge guide, and that is no longer shipped with the OF 1400. So do I need to buy the Edge Guide to get the rods. I guess I will just need to wait until Rockler gets my Guide Rail stop in. The I might need to spend more money and wait another week. The guide rail stop was a special order item at Roclker, Ontario, Calif.

I believe the rods are 8mm, 5/16 rod from the Borg will work if you don't want to wait, or if you want longer custom rods for any reason. I am going from memory on this and cannot confirm from my present undisclosed location.  ::)

No rods? edge guides and rods are standard with every router I've ever purchased- whats the deal?

My 1400's come with rods.

The edge guide and rail stop are separate.

Did you check the very bottom of the systainer?  Black on black isn't easy to see.  I just got a OF1400 and the rods were in there.  I thought it was a mistake, since they would surely charge extra for those...

Sorry, I missed this thread.  The 1400 comes with the rods. They are in the very bottom of the systainer and do tend to be hard to see as John noted since they are black against a black systainer insert.

Both my OF1400 and OF2000 came with rods and edge guides- but they were purchased 2 and 3 years ago.

They hide down there!  I do recall, I might be crazy here, being told that they were actually going to add some color either to the systainer insert or the rods so they'd pop a bit and we'd notice them better.  Thought it was cool that things down to the smallest detail, like this, are noted by Fes.

Pretty sure there are no rods in the case, but then again I might have missed them. I will check again when I get home to night. So if they are missing I will take it up with Rockler. Thanks  Shane.

What comes in the package with the guide rail stops?  I just received a set and I don't think the box contained what it was supposed to contain.  Do these come with instructions?

Have not received mine yet. But I think it is just the stop that glides on the rail.
