OF 1400 Heat Question

Hello foggers!

I used my new OF 1400 for the first time today, hogging out dadoes. I was cutting with the edge guide, 3/8" x 1/4"D in air dried soft maple. I'm using a brand new Whiteside solid carbide up spiral 3/8" bit, so this is a one-pass operation. In all, I cut 40 running feet of dado with short pauses every few feet to switch stock into my clamping jig.

Overall, the cut quality is outstanding. I was running at speed 4 the majority of the time, after I initially tried higher spindle speeds. Good chips - not dust - no burning, everything about the result and the bit looks great after the fact.

However, I noticed after I was done with the run and removing the bit, that the spindle was very hot. The top of the machine was also very warm to the touch, as was the aluminum housing above the spindle. I also noticed some light sparking on the armature under load.

Does it sound like there is any cause for concern? I've done a lot of handheld routing over the years, but never with a festool. From past experience, this seems like a lot of heat. The result speaks for itself, I just want to make sure my fancy new machine is running happy.

Cscade, google festool of1400 getting hot. It will give you enough information to allay your concerns. When new the 1400 tends to get hot and also spark in the areas you described, mine showed similar behaviour. Don't think you have anything to worry about.

The OF1400 has a heat sensor somewhere inside the guttyworks of the machine and will shut down if things get too hot. Mine took about a half-hour to get going again after doing the same thing you were doing but in cedar with a 1/2" bit. It didn't quit mid-cut but wouldn't start up for the next pass. Thought I killed the bastard.
