OF 1400 or 2200?

I have a 2 1/2 diameter 60 degree chamfer bit that I would like to use in a hand router to add a light reveal on a maple table I am building.  Do either the 1400 or 2200 accept a bit this large and allow it to plunge through its throat?  Either as is or with accessory base?  I don't see where in specs where this capacity is listed.  Many thanks.  [smile]

OF 1010 maximum cutter diameter 35mm
OF 1400 maximum cutter diameter 63mm
OF 2200 maximum cutter diameter 89mm

So borderline for OF 1400 (2 1/2 is 63.5mm) but absolutely no problem for OF 2200.

Thanks, Gary.  Sounds like it might be time to invest in a 2200.  I have the 1010 and an older Bosch for 1/2 bits but it can't take 2 1/2 dia.

I worry though that 2200 may be too much router for most things I do but having large bit flexibility sure would be nice.  I'll review some of the older posts and reviews on 2200.  Thx again.

One more thought/question if someone with these routers could help me.

Is "maximum cutter diameter" the actual size of opening?  Or a festool recommendation?

I ask because Gary characterized the OF 1400 as borderline for a 2.5 inch bit.  I measured the bit I have as 63.2 mm.

So will a 63.2 mm bit plunge through the opening on a 1400 safely?

Yes it will plunge through the opening on a 1400 safely.

I use a 65mm bit in the 1400 (mounted in the CMS system) without problems.

The first time I plunged the bit through the router base it shaved a teeny weeny bit of the opening in the base...actually only a very small bit sized approx, 5 x 25 mm. I guess It shaved of less than 1/10 of a mm.

Kind regards
Henrik

Happy to be able to help.

I don't own an OF 2200...only an OF1400. Actually it was my intention to buy the OF 2200 years back but when I lifted it at my dealers shop I found it to be too heavy a beast so I bought the OF 1400. I haven't regretted it. Even with the 65 mm bit I feel that the OF 1400 is powerfull enough.  [smile]

And now I have a question for the american CMS owners.

You see I own the older CMS version that allows up to 65 mm bits using the OF 1400 and up to 68-69 mm bits using the OF 2200.
I have seen on Festools homepage that the new version (the version available in NA) only allows up to 60 mm bits no matter if you use the OF 1400 or the OF 2200 (!) Is that really true? What makes this smaller limit? I expect the hole size in the CMS modul to be larger than 60 mm (?)

/Henrik
