Hello everyone

I just purchased the OF 1400 Router over the weekend and was able to work with the unit last night. The overall impression of the router has exceeded my expectations although, the stiffness of the plunge is difficult to overcome. The left locking knob was loose and I was able to move the router up and down although it seemed to be a jerky.
Is this due to being a new router and needs time to break in or is there something wrong with the unit? In setting up a roundover bit, I had to take my fist and slightly hit the top of the router to make the proper adjustments.
I've seen some youtube video's and they show that you can move the router up and down with one hand on the power switch side. I tried this and I'm not able to move the unit down with one hand, (not that this is the proper way of operation) but the smoothness of the router just seems to be lacking.

Can anyone give me a few pointers?

Thank you
Jim

I have never had either of the problems you are experiencing with my OF1400. I would exchange it for another unit or send it to Festool for repair.

Richard.

Thanks Richard, I'll send Festool and email and see what they have to say. I'll try to keep everyone posted.

Same here. I have had the 1400 for about 6 years.  Always been smooth.

Hi Jim,

I have only ever had the 1400 router do that when the plunge lock knob was loosened  but not far enough. If the knob is just at the point of allowing the router to plunge it will be hard to move and jerky.  But if you have It loosened more than that, then it should be completely smooth.

Give Festool a call.

Thanks everyone. I did email Festool and Lester did call me concerning the issue that I'm having. He stated to try a little bit of pneumatic air tool oil, which is 10 W oil, and place that on the guide posts. Move the router up and down several times, then wipe off the excess oil.

Well I did place the oil on the guide rails, moved the router up and down multiple time and the jerkyness has gone away. According to Lester with Festool, the router is normally in the systainer for some time before the router is actually purchased and used. During this time, the oil coating on the guide rails may dry out, causing the plunge action to be jerky. By placing a thin coating of oil on the guides will enhance the smoothness of the plunge action once again.

Now I know why I purchase this type of equipment, excellent response from the manufactor even though the solution was simple. Festool takes the time to call the end user to help out troubleshooting the problem. As for the equipment itself, well all of the Festool owners know the answer to this, Superb quality.

Thank you Lester and the Festool Team.
