Hi!

I just bought a brand new OF 1400. This was quite a big investment for me, so I was a little alarmed when I turned it on. When I release the power button, there are electrical sparks inside the motor housing, and it smells like if I was grinding metal.

A less important thing is that the springs sound quite squeaky when I lower and raise the router by hand. It has absolutely no practical effects, but it doesn't sound like Festool quality.

Any help or reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

Probably just the motor's brushes bedding in. Run it for a little while, if it goes away it's the brushes, if not send it back. Minor sparks in any brushed motor aren't unusual nor a slight burning smell when new, but experience and judgement determines if it's excessive or not and that can only be done in person with the tool in hand.

As for the squeaky rods, could be anything. If it were me I'd just give the whole assembly a blast with compressed air and a tiny spray of WD40 or any generic maintenance lubricant and see if it goes away.

WD40 turns sticky over time.  It is not a very good lubricant.  Try a very light machine oil instead.

It sparks a lot when you release the trigger because the electric brake activates, most people find it worrying at first, I know I did but it does bed in over time.

Thanks, that's great to hear. I guess they don't call this a power tool for no reason.

if you think that's bad watch a washing machine motor on a spin cycle :)

I used to be able to see the reflections of the blue flashes from the tiles in the utility
