Hi all,

Am waiting for delivery of my first ever router...the beautiful and cheeky little minx that is the OF 1010.  While I'm excited about this, I've also been daydreaming of owning a domino.  Now clearly for a cheap punk like me the likelihood of this occurring is minimal, but how close can you get by routing a couple of mortices and making your own little dominos? Heck, could I even use actual dominos to pretend it's the real thing..?  ::)

Mac,

Kind of like this...see pic

I made a jig that can make Domino mortises...it's in the Jig section here at FOG.

Good luck with the 1010, I want one too.

As far as the joint is concerned you can not only get close you can do exactly the same. :)

Of course the the only problem is that you will have to make quite a few different jigs and to be as exact in placing, width and depth you will probably start by taking 50 times as long. :( But after practice you will probably get to down to only 10 times as long.  :'(

The upside though is that you will have a lot of fun jigs and you can use different sizes of tennon easily.

Good luck

Having made a few such jigs (none as nice as Mr. Pedisich's) I agree wholeheartedly.  That said, if the price of the Domi is out of reach, try a good biscuit joiner like a Lamello.  I own the Domi and the bottom-of-the-line Lamello, and still won't give up the Lamello.  Overall the Domi is a better value for me (I make what I like to call "furniture") but offhand I can't think of anything that the Domi does that I couldn't do with the Lamello, given a little extra time.

Hope this helps.

John

Frank,

That does look interesting, might be just the job. Thanks for pointing it out.
