OF1400 Base Plate

I just opened up the brand new OF1400 that I bought off eBay last week.

Is it normal for the diagram in the top of the systainer to get beat up like this during shipment?

When I opened the systainer the foam spacer had come unstuck from the double stick tape in the lid and was sitting directly on top of the router.  This is pretty much exactly what happened to the TS75 that I bought reconditioned (diagram beaten up and foam detached), but I figured this condition was the result of the fact that it was older and reconditioned.  I didn't think this should happen with a brand new tool.

Is this how a brand new OF1400 base should look?

I initially thought there was a protective film layer on the base that it supposed to be removed, but upon further inspection that does not appear to the case.  Then I thought maybe the base was damaged during shipping, but when I think about the detached foam in the systainer lid and the base plate it makes me wonder if this unit might have been used or at least been out as a display unit.

Is this normal and I'm just being overly picky?

There SHOULD be a protective plastic film on the router base. It will have a small tab at one corner of the router base to aid in removal of the film.

From the pictures I can’t say definitively that it’s been used, however I would say maybe it’s been on display and it’s been handled by individuals.

Especially since it does not have the film layer I would say that has at least been displayed or tried out or something.

I think the spacer falling down was my "biggest" complaint since every time I open the lid I need to fix the foam.  My picture might have been cut off, but there does appear to be a tab, but it seems to be "tucked" under the plate - meaning I'd need to unscrew the screws to get at it.  That's contrary to how I've seen most protective shields or covers - usually it's very apparent that they are meant to be pulled off as soon as you get it.

Especially since it does not have the film layer I would say that has at least been displayed or tried out or something.

Is it possible that the film layer is still there, just kind of bonded in place?  I tried picking at it with my fingernail, but nothing immediately felt like it should peel off.

The picture doesn't look normal for a brand new OF1400?  I initially thought I might have been overly nit picky, but it seems like something is off.

I would agree with Seth, it was likely a display unit.  But I don’t think it was used.  The first time you use it, that baseplate will get fine scratches in it.  Superficial only, but I see no signs of that on yours.  The lid insert and foam coming loose are normal in new tools as mentioned.  Use hot glue to permanently stick the foam block to the lid.

My guess is it is a new unit, never used.

Peel the plastic off the base plate. Mine came the same way, you’re  just seeing the distortion due to the plastic.

Not much sticks to a Sys, no unusual to have the foam fall off.

IMHO

Damage on the pictogram attached to the lid mean that the lid has been closed (with force) with the router not in it's original place. there is no way that it gets damage from transportation without having the systainer itself non damaged.

For the base you can see scratched means that the router has been removed from it's original package. This in it's own reveal that the tool is not in a NEW state, even if the router motor never been used.

Personally if I paid the full price I would return it. If bought at a reduced price I would ask for some kind of refund.

I enlarged your photo of the baseplate.  It looks like the plastic is still on it to me.  I think it's fine, but would caution against buying off of ebay unless you're getting a real bargain.

Another layer of 2 sides tape or a little hot melt glue will solve the foam issue.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.  The plastic was in fact still on - I guess I'm just blind.  I feel kinda dumb [embarassed].

It looked like the tab had been previously removed and just stuck back on since the film didn't pull with the tab - the tab just came off completely.

I normally wouldn't buy off eBay, but I bought it from a regular tool company that was selling on eBay, not a private sale and the 15% discount was too good to pass up.

The foam spacer seems to be stuck back to the lid now for the time being.  It always falls off in the TS75 systainer though.  I think I will use some carpet tape to try to reattach the lid since it's really annoying.
