I'm working today in customers garage, when old guy across the street came over and after brief conversation, he gave me this Stanley no. 45 plane. I love vintage tools and have collected a few over the years, but not familiar with this style of hand plane...anyone know anything about it?

Nice one, can't help but love that!  8)

Your Stanley #45 looks a lot like my Record #50 Combination Plane:

I have been messing around with mine lately, totally awesome when you get the groove.  [wink]

Have a good one,

I picked up a 45 in immaculate condition recently, but I haven't done anything with it ... it was just another midnight Ebay browse and buy impulse [embarassed]

I haven't even though of a use for it, but remember - youtube is your friend, just search for "Stanley 45"

I have a couple of Stanley 45's -- they were promoted as "do everything" planes back when all woodworkers had planes in their tool chests.  With some patience & understanding they are a very versatile tool for making moldings of any sort.

what I have heard is about 45's is that they can be finiky to set up and use. Some people love them others can never get them to work. I fall into the camp of "I dont have one, and would only get one for a wall hanger.
