For  long time, i could not figure how to add pics.  suddenly, either i figured it out or the gremlins quit playing with me.  For a couple of months, i was able to add pics.

All of a sudden, i had to try many times to get a pic to show.  Finally, even tho i was following directions for adding full size, i could not get any to show.  I just added my comments and closed out that page, and went to another discussion.  sooner or later, some body added a reply and i opened to see what had been said, and behold, there was/were my pics.  I just figured it was me.

I have always said full size pictures are better than those crappy thumbnail pictures and this is just another big +1 to full size images again! Yay!!

Problem with full size pictures is it takes ages to load them because people don't resize them and upload 2.5 MB pics while 150 Kb would suffice. Thumbnails keep loading times, server load and page clutter to a minimum.

I've always used the thumbnail option for that reason, to keep the load time down. Figured folks only have to look at the photos if they want to.

My avatar was gone too, hence, the new one.  I'm guessing the majority of folks, myself included, like to see full sized pics.  I find thumbnails to be annoying, I rarely click on them.

Regarding image sizes - I know that personally I prefer the larger sizes.  This forum has existed for long enough that the original software didn't support images very well and custom programming was done to allow for that.  A gallery section was developed to make it a bit easier to do a post with numerous images.  Flash forward a number of years and there are now a ton of sites that allow for image and video sharing, the gallery function is no longer supported by the software ( that might be part of the issue with older posts (that linked to the gallery)) and now there is an internal function for handling images.  Months ago Shane had to devise a custom work around to help alleviate the issue with images coming in sideways.

It is absolutely true that the image processing portion of the forum does do some compression and reduce file sizes to some degree.  It is also true that if users would reduce the quality of their images and also minimize the file size it would help out with load times, etc., time has proven that it won't happen often.

It seems that there is an issue that has occurred with the forum software - being it maintenance or other.  At this current time there is an issue,  and there isn't a Shane (a FOG loving computer IT professional) sitting and continuously monitoring and nourishing the forum (often on his own personal time) available immediately to handle these types of issues.  So in this absence this issue might take a bit of time to address.

In the meantime if you don't like the fact that your avatar is missing - please reload it.  As far as posts from way back that are missing images, if you are the author and notice missing images in some of yours - it might be helpful to others to modify your posts and upload files at full size (better to have slower load times than no images) or else wait to see what happens when the situation gets addressed. I know that might be a hassle but we all contribute and receive here freely.

Folks,

The server crashed a few weeks ago because it ran out of space. As a stop gap, we deleted some older posts and which apparently linked to some images that were deleted. The server crash also seems to have turned off notifications for a few FOG members as well.

We are aware of the issue and do have a plan to address it, however we are waiting on the qualified person to handle this issue.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you for your patience.

On the issue of image sizes, I have said this before, and I'll say it again....

REDUCE THE SIZE OF YOUR IMAGES TO A MAXIMUM OF 1200 WIDTH!!

If you do that, they will show up full size on the forum, and with a small bandwidth footprint. (Under 500kb generally). Quality is NOT affected.

A lot of guys are taking their pictures at the highest resolution their cameras can manage. That's great if your planning on using the picture on a highway billboard, but it is totally RIDICULOUS if pictures are for use online.  If you MUST take your shots at high megapixels, then do your viewers a favor and reduce the size of the shot BEFORE posting. Use Preview on a MAC, or PAINT on Windows. 1200pixels MAX width.

As some have said, working through thumbnails is a pain....ESPECIALLY when the resulting shot is 4 or 5 MEGABYTES in size (some even more!). Slow loadiing and takes up bandwidth, especially for those in countries where bandwidth is limited and paid for incrementally. The same goes for those people on the road and paying for bandwidth on their iPads, iPhones, and laptops.

PLEASE!  We all want to see full size shots, and if you'll reduce the pixel sizes, they will come up fast, low bandwidth, and still at a quality level that is not reduced.

Cheers,

Frank

I have a 90 MBit connection. But when 4 MB pictures load and then 5 or 10 of them in a row, it still slows down.

When I resize pictures I always make them 1024 x 800 max, while the filesize is under 200 Kb at a quality (JPEG 80%) that is perfect for this forum.

When you upload such large pics you're doing nobody a service and I don't understand why it is so difficult to figure out for people how to resize them, because it is not. It is as easy tying your shoes.

I'm not surprised the forum ran out of space with all those 4MB pictures, that can go fast.

Any news Steve? Researching a project currently and the lack of photos on posts is becoming a real PITA...  [crying]

I lost a lot of pictures from some early build posts here.  Same over on TalkFestool.  I've since opened a free Flickr account and upload all my pictures there.  You get a whopping 1 tb for free!  Then when I post a picture here, I just link to it on Flickr.  There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's a short one.  Well worth it.
