My past week has been largely spent in front of the TV watching the 2012 Olympics.  Mostly, i have been watching my U-Conn girls and friends (6 U-Conn'ers and 6 ladies from the rest of the world) beat up on all comers.  I have heard some Quotes from several interviews.

Geno Auriemma (The U-Conn coach who was picked to be the USA team coach) is always good for sage and sarcastic remarks. When was aked how it felt to have all of that great talent at his disposal.  He replied (not necessarily word for word copy, but the context is correct) "It is like somebody giving me the keys to a Maseratti.  It is great to drive but I'm afraid of running it into a tree."

While being interviewed after the final match, Diana Taurasi (U-Conn), Tamika Catchings (Tennessee) and Sue Bird (U-Conn) were asked how the three could work together when they had been such bitter rivals when in college.  Catchings laughed and, hugging the other two, said “Oh, we just grow up.”

During same interview, Catchings was asked if she felt sorry for the teams they beat.  Taurasi, who seems never to be at a loss for words, immediately interrupted with “I don’t feel sorry for anybody.  I LOVE GOLD.”

But the best, and maybe most honest reply to an interviewer came from a young boxer who, (from USA team) at 17 had taken the gold in HER BOXING weight division.  The interviewer asked her why she took up boxing as her choice of athletics.  The young lady replied, “I just like beating up people.”

As with any sporting event, there are always quotable quotes from before and after matches.  Perhaps the most egotistical was from the young man who was the only Gold winner for the USA boxing team.  His twitter account name is "I see only gold".  And even tho he might have seemed egotistical, he had great confidence and he did walk the walk.  He did take home the gold.

Most important, my two favorites, Women's basketball (the U-Conn connection especially) and the Women's soccer both won.
Of all the losers, i was most impressed with the attitude of the French women immediately after their loss in the final basketball game to USA, and when they were on the podium receiving their award medals and flowers.  Those girls were so happy, you would think they were the ones taking home the Gold.  I sure had not wanted them to win, but I sure did admire their attitudes. For that, i have to think they were winners. (Note: For you French FOG'ers, I never said that  ::)  [eek])

Tinker,

That was Jordan Burroughs, and he is a freestyle wrestler.  He is also a Jersey boy, we make some tough 'rasslers in the dirty Jerz.  The "all I see is gold" thing is because he has won every tournament he has entered since '09. A little cocky I guess, but the kid is good.
The US had two gold medalist wrestlers this year, Burroughs at 74kg, and Jake Varner at 96kg.

I didn't love the coverage, wish they would shown a wider variety of events.  Swimming and running get pretty old after a while.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed these Olympics more than any other since I was of the age when I dreamed of one day participating.  To me it seemed as though the athletes had more fun and the host country tried to really make it about the Games themselves.  Of course this is only my opinion and it may have been influenced by the fact that I have made many friends overseas thru this place.  In my opinion Well Done!

I too have watched much more of these games than any other.  Not because it's in UK, the TV coverage is good.

Yeah Vin, I saw Varner this afternoon on a replay.  both he and boroughs were good.  They had to be to take home gold.  they both had great matches.

I have to agree on the coverage and the presentation.  The last couple of Olympics, the commentators just got carried away with talking and showing competitors personal history and everything about them while events were going on.  I got very disgusted with the entire situation.  This 2012 was the best coverage I have seen.  they showed more of continuous action as if the action were of the greater importance.  I would like to have seen more of the so called minor sports, but there are just so many hours in the day.  Over all, I think they did a great job this year.

AND, the US girls won both soccer and basketball.  [big grin]

Think there was 27 channels showing it in the uk

We've been hosting a Chinese foreign exchange student during the games (14 years old). It's been fun as we established a good natured bantering/bragging as the U.S. and China kept leap frogging each other in medal counts.

Funniest comment he made: "I love basketball..... we will not beat U.S."

That said, I think this video sums up my feelings about the constant coverage.. we gave up trying to see it all:

Gloves and Boots on the Olympics

I am sure that this Olympics will do a lot to inspire young people, all over the World, to take up sport or at least keep fit. The BBC did a great job for the UK viewers - I hope that everyone else was able to see what they wanted. Having so many dedicated channels made it possible to follow every bit of the action.

I have attached a picture in recognition of the fine effort made by Usain Bolt - I am too arthritic to do the pose properly but I am sure you know what I was trying to achieve.

YOU LOOK EVEN BETTER THAN USAIN BOLT  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

Nice, Peter... with a yellow shirt, you'd have nearly had the Jamaican colors.  We want to see a sprint in the next video  [popcorn]

Hi Paul - we haven't talked for ages...

I did look for a yellow T shirt but I have none - it may not show in my videos but I have olive skin and yellow just does not suit me! There is no way you will see me running - but I have a Sprinter (Mercedes that is).

I hope all is well at 12.7mm Shy - did you check out those Parf Dogs?

Peter

Oh definitely saw the video.  Like how you can replicate the MFT top quickly.  And it does make it easier to align the guide rail.  Well done.  I thought I had replied to that thread.  Perhaps not!  Videos tend to get bookmarked to watch at night so sometimes I don't get back to the thread after watching.

so you trying to say you didn't like it & are just being polite  [tongue]

Troublemaker... :)  no, a difficulty with the rail dogs is that it can be really difficult to raise and lower the rail since it is so constrained by the dogs.  I wax mine and keep them a hair unscrewed.  It works.  Parf dogs have the advantage of just being a fence for the back of the rail.
