My past week has been largely spent in front of the TV watching the 2012 Olympics. Mostly, i have been watching my U-Conn girls and friends (6 U-Conn'ers and 6 ladies from the rest of the world) beat up on all comers. I have heard some Quotes from several interviews.
Geno Auriemma (The U-Conn coach who was picked to be the USA team coach) is always good for sage and sarcastic remarks. When was aked how it felt to have all of that great talent at his disposal. He replied (not necessarily word for word copy, but the context is correct) "It is like somebody giving me the keys to a Maseratti. It is great to drive but I'm afraid of running it into a tree."
While being interviewed after the final match, Diana Taurasi (U-Conn), Tamika Catchings (Tennessee) and Sue Bird (U-Conn) were asked how the three could work together when they had been such bitter rivals when in college. Catchings laughed and, hugging the other two, said “Oh, we just grow up.”
During same interview, Catchings was asked if she felt sorry for the teams they beat. Taurasi, who seems never to be at a loss for words, immediately interrupted with “I don’t feel sorry for anybody. I LOVE GOLD.”
But the best, and maybe most honest reply to an interviewer came from a young boxer who, (from USA team) at 17 had taken the gold in HER BOXING weight division. The interviewer asked her why she took up boxing as her choice of athletics. The young lady replied, “I just like beating up people.”
As with any sporting event, there are always quotable quotes from before and after matches. Perhaps the most egotistical was from the young man who was the only Gold winner for the USA boxing team. His twitter account name is "I see only gold". And even tho he might have seemed egotistical, he had great confidence and he did walk the walk. He did take home the gold.
Most important, my two favorites, Women's basketball (the U-Conn connection especially) and the Women's soccer both won.
Of all the losers, i was most impressed with the attitude of the French women immediately after their loss in the final basketball game to USA, and when they were on the podium receiving their award medals and flowers. Those girls were so happy, you would think they were the ones taking home the Gold. I sure had not wanted them to win, but I sure did admire their attitudes. For that, i have to think they were winners. (Note: For you French FOG'ers, I never said that :
[eek])
