Opinions Please, Spray Equipment

Hello all

I’ve been considering the purchase of some new spray equipment.  It’s been 15-18 yrs or so since I purchased my old hvlp Apollo air assist system.  I believe I’d like to move onto something a bit easier to set up and clean and use.  Home shop limited space as most of deal with.  Spraying from a canisters has its benefits but too much cleaning for small jobs.  I think I’d like a gravity feed type gun.  I’m tired of cleaning hoses and having multiple sets of hoses.    I’m not sure about staying with the air assist or going with a self contained system that creates its own air.  I’m just starting this journey into this and that is why I seek advice on where to start.  Price isn’t really a factor, great reliability great end results are what I’m after and ease of use.  I know I’ll have a knew learning curve to get over but I’ve understood the newer units are better equipped and better refined

I have been using a Apollo HVLP system for over 25 years. I started out with a 1100 turbine & 5000 gun. A few years ago I got 1050 VS turbine and a 7500 gun. I have sprayed hundreds of gallons of finish with the systems. It has done everything I have wanted it to do. Easy setup & easy cleanup.

I don’t think any other system will be any easier to set up and clean than your Apollo hvlp. Brand doesn’t matter. The only improvement I can think of is to use disposable material liners.

Oh wait, you said “air assist system”? So you’re using a pressure pot to drive material to the gun and cleaning those hoses are a pain. I see your point there.

Don’t know of anything more advanced than the Graco handheld guns that eliminates hoses but that’s way different than hvlp.

I'm with you on the cleaning hassle but air assisted airless is the king for spraying high solids finishes. If you're not going to be using a lot of paint type finishes, then you will be happy with the newer apollo 7000 series guns and the 5 stage turbine. Finely adjustable, awesome fan patterns and pretty easy to dial in. Find a kid to mentor and make him clean your rig. Just watch over him for the first twenty times...

Hey Fellows,

Thanks for the replies, yes I do spray with a pressure pot and it becomes a hassle at times.  It used to not bother me but now I'm to the point of oh Sh_t if I want to spray I have to clean whatever hoses the gun the pot liner since they can last for many uses if you take care of them.  I use.  And being in the Northeast winter plays a roll for a home shop person besides cleaning.  I do use liners in my pots so that's an easy clean but I keep two sets of hoses for waterbased and solvent based products. 

I sometimes just grab one of my cheap non HVLP guns and go for it which is ok but not quiet the same as the HVLP guns. 

I will look into your suggestions on guns and systems.  I'll bet I'd be happy with just cleaning a gun and fluid container.  Any other opinions you all have to offer with regards to newer style equipment I'm all ears.

I'd take a long look at Apollo's new 7700 gun.  Easy to break down and clean, spray is fantastic and can be setup for top or bottom feed in about 30 seconds.  Or pressure pot if you want.  Plus it can be converted from turbine to compressed air feed if you desire.

Apollo's new turbines with variable speed might be worth a look for you too.

I use the airless GRACO handheld for spraying doors and it does a marvelous job.  Have sprayed well over 150 doors with it and not one hiccup.  I have the Graco Ultra.  Will opt for the cordless model on my next spray gun purchase.  Not fighting with any hoses or power cords is awesome on top of getting airless spray gun quality.  Win-win.

I was spraying with an Apollo 5 turbine with a 7500 gun and got great results a long time back.  I'm just getting back into cabinet building and am looking forward to using the Apollo once again.  It is a bit of a pain to clean but I suspect the same is common among all systems?  There are some new Italian? paints on the market in the last year that are supposed to make a huge difference.  I decided on Renner and just received.  I'll post results one way or the other when I'm done.
