Opinions wanted on how to finish this out

I figured I'd share and maybe get some good inspiration from you fine folks. The door is an arched top african mahogany (can't say I built it) trimmed in mahogany brick mold. The overhang is supported by solid 3x8 sapele mahogany braces mortised into 4x6 in the walls and double 2x10s on the overhang. The underside of the barrel is v-t&g boards made from 1x4 sapele.

Now my dilemma is how to finish off the side of the house above the door. My original idea was to use flexible j-channel and just run the vinyl siding up but I feel like there may be a classier and more finished look. I've seen what I'd describe as sun rays above doors but that's just nkt my taste but I was hoping that maybe someone here has dealt wth this or could give an opinion. Seriously all opinions are welcome!

I'm having trouble getting the pictures to post. I attach them and go to post and the server times out and nothing gets posted, any thoughts?

Perhaps your image size is too big or an unsupported format. Best would be to convert them to JPG, 0.5 MB or less.

Or the server's simply having a fit. It happens.

I export my photos to a separate file I've named FOG. I export them as medium/medium. Attach the photos using the ones in the FOG file. That's how I solved the same problem I was having.

There are some pretty cool things you can do with Automator on a Mac.

For example, I have a folder on the desktop called "picture resizer" with an Automator script attached to it that makes pictures 33% smaller when you drop them in there.

Just an FYI, as you said you're on a Mac and it opens some cool possibilities.

Lets try this again.

You could just fill it like the siding, would look fine, but a bit plane. There are many options to fill out a half circle, here's just an example. Spoke patterns are often used.

The fact that you photoshopped that together for me is awesome, thank you! The sunburst isn't my style and my wife also gave it a resounding NO  [eek]. Again I appreciate it but have you seen any other ways that may look good? Other than just siding it we also had a thought to use a sheet of pvc and paint it the color of the siding and then put our house numbers up there. Just not sure though and I know ill redo it if it doesn't feel "right".

You could do shakes.  There's cedar, vinyl and even Hardy(cement board) type s.  That would break up the horizontal and vertical lines.  That semi circle should be a focal point.  I would not run the same horizontal siding in that space.  I understand you don't like the sunburst, it is classic and exactly purposed for this.  If you did the shakes, its more of a grid ish and incorporates the. Horizontal lines on a shorter scale and also lends vertical lines to the height of the portico helping to the height in with the very horizontal style of the house.

Shakes could work I'll have to look at different ones. What I don't really like about the sunburst is I feel it doesn't tie into an archer door well. I think the sunburst is for a flat top door to go into the rounded barrel, just my opinion though.

I'm not trying to blow off anyone's ideas but keep them coming who knows when someone could come up with something unconventional that would look great.
