Finally finished this Oriental influenced coffee table.

Its made out of pacific rimu and finished in polyU. 3 coats sprayed on with a couple coats wiped on to bring out the gloss.

Made with Domino joints and sliding dovetails. Its not very big just 850x500. Had some 900 offcuts so decided to utilize them for the top.

That's really pretty, KorDes. Could you tell us a bit more about the joinery? I'm guessing from the fact that the rails are fatter on the ends than the middle that they do not actually extend all the way through the legs. Are the ends of the rails just decorative? Also, how are the legs joined to the sliding dovetails?

Very nice proportions. Good job!

That is a very tastefully done table. Nice proportions, great choice of wood and wonderful style. A+

Thanks for your comments. As for the joinery its pretty simple stuff.

The bottom rails are 3 pieces. The curve was shaped when the rail was one piece and then 40mm was cut out where the legs are. This continues the curve from the middle piece to the ends. Two 6x40 dominoes are place on either side of the legs and the rail and ends are glued on.

The legs and the sliding dovetails have a 10mm cutout to accomodate each other and an 8x30 domino in the cutouts to help reinforce it.

KorDes, do you have pictures of the build? If so and you are in N. America this could be a contest entry. Very nice work.

Regretfully I dont have any pictures of the build. And sadly I live in New Zealand, so I dont qualify for the contest entry. But I am pleased that you considered my work good enough for the contest.

Have you ever used Kauri Wood? It's the 50,000 year old wood the found in a glacier in New Zeland. www.ancientwoods.com is the website I believe. If not, you should check it out.

I have worked with both swamp kauri and logged kauri when I was doing  my apprenticeship. I even have a swamp kauri chopping board. Really beautiful and easy to work with. I would say its slightly softer than rimu, and looks just as stunning. Both NZ native Kauri and Rimu is very hard to come by and is very expensive. Most of whats available is either from PNG or the Pacific Islands.
