Other Types of Dominos

If someone at Festool is reading this:
At the moment I am looking at buying a biscuit joiner. Actually, I like the Domino very much and it would be a great help with building some of my furniture. On the other hand, when building with sheet material, I really appreciate the ability of a biscuit joiner to use the "other" biscuits offered by lamello and Knapp, such as the simplex, the duplex and the self-fastening versions which should be of much help during glue-up of some corpuses.

I think some of the features of these things could be reproduced and maybe even be improved much in the domino system. So, there is my question: are there any plans (by Festool or any other company) to release "self clamping" or "knockdown" or "hinge" type dominos in the near Future?

That's a good point, Aki. Don't know the answer myself....

However, it does trigger an idea in my head - are there any Soss hinges that would fit in the domino mortices? Has anyone tried?

JRB

Edit: It just occurred to me that Soss hinges may not be well known in the US, so here's a link so you can have a look.

Edit 2: A quick search shows it's an American company anyway. Oh well, you learn something new everyday.... :D

Aki,

Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately our engineers are not people that talk a lot about future product ideas and additions, until
they have a very good understanding of how a new product will look, what it will do and when it will be
available.

While I cannot give you concrete information on future products, I can tell you that in my opinion we will see
a lot more products that will enhance the Domino system in the future. Festool is thinking in systems, and
the Domino system offers a lot of opportunities for additional accessories and consumables.

Keep in mind that we can only "reproduce" things that are not protected by a patent.

I personally would not base my decision to buy a Domino machine on the availability of self-clamping or
knock-down Dominoes. If you do the right type of work, and you do enough of it, the Domino will pay
for itself in no time. If you want to find out, buy a Domino and use our 30-day money back guarantee if you
don't think it helps you being more productive.

Thanks again for your question!

Well, there you go.  His first post on the forum asking a good question which is answered the same day by the CEO of the company (for North America).  I still find this one of the most remarkable features of this forum.  Thanks for paying such close attention to your customers, Christian.  I can't tell you how many people I've referred to this forum while visiting my local wood stores.  Your participation is one of the examples I always give promoting the value of the Festool Owners Group.  Thanks also to Matthew for providing a place for us to gather!
