Our New Group Space!

Hi Everyone,
I've decided that the best way to raffles the Dominoes is to have one winner each week, over a five-week period.  This will build momentum, but all the Dominoes will be raffled off before the tool is introduced to the public in April.

Here's the schedule, which will be announced as we go along:
Raffle 1: Deadline to enter is 2/1/07.  Winner announced 2/5/07.
Raffle 2: Deadline to enter is 2/8/07.  Winner announced 2/12/07.
Raffle 3: Deadline to enter is 2/15/07.  Winner announced 2/19/07.
Raffle 4: Deadline to enter is 2/22/07.  Winner announced 2/26/07.
Raffle 5: Deadline to enter is 3/1/07.  Winner announced 3/5/07.

You only need to enter once to be in all five raffles.  So, if you don't win the first one, you are automatically entered in the second one (I'll add this as another rule).

Thanks everyone,
Matthew Schenker

Matthew,

I think that's very fair and reasonable.  It provides freedom of communication and guidelines that we can easily live with.  (Of course, if some one asks I'll probably point to Uncle Bob.) ;)

Dan.

I expect that the winner must provide an address in the USA because I don't think that Festool USA is allowed to ship to addresses outside the United States (in particular, in my case, to Canada).  Or is this a worldwide Festool constest with the appropriate Festool distributor in each country providing the Domino?

Mathew, will you check with Festool about this please?

Excellent question!  This could be a big hassle.  Most of the membership is in the US, but we have a significant number of members from Canada, Britain, Germany, Australia, The Netherlands, and Sweden.

I've written to Christian at Festool to check on this.  I'll report back later.

Thanks for being on top of things Frank!

Matt, maybe I missed it--I only skimmed the thread, but once you announce the new board, can you leave the Yahoo archive up and make it "non postable"? I'm not familiar with the Yahoo setup...it would not be a a good thing if folks kept posting there once this new space is opened up.

Matthew, is there any way for you to get rid of the "newbie" and similar designations under the members' names?  It's so lame.

OK, here's what I heard from Christian...

The raffles will be limited to members from the United States and Canada.  For logistical reasons, I fully understand that this is the way we need to go.

Thank you to Frank for helping to avoid what could have been a real nightmare!

There will be a raffle each week, using the schedule I posted in an earlier message.

So, here's our new (and hopefully final) set of rules:

Code:
1. Participation is limited to members in the United States and Canada.  Forum administrators and Festool sales agents may not participate.
2. To be entered in the raffle, you must register as a member of the new Festool Owners Group, which is located at www.festoolownersgroup.com.
3. You must join the new group by 12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on [date changes with each raffle].
4. As your official entry form, send an e-mail to matthewschenker@festoolownersgroup.com.
5. Type "Raffle Entry" (no quotes) as the subject line of your e-mail.
6. The body of the e-mail must contain your name, address, and telephone number.
7. Only one winner per household.
8. You only need to enter once to be considered for all five Domino raffles.

So, those of you in the US and Canada have a better chance of winning now!

Sorry to bug you about this again Mathew but I would like to know whether a Canadian winner would have his win shipped to him/her from Canada or from the USA.  I once won a tool raffle in the USA and the gift was shipped to me via UPS which charges exorbitant brokerage fees and, even though it was a gift and should have been marked as such, on the package I had to pay Canadian taxes on the full value of the item.

To avoid all this, if the win is being shipped from the USA, I will submit a US address.

John,

Matthew, is there any way for you to get rid of the "newbie" and similar designations under the members' names?  It's so lame.

Yes, I'm not too keen on that either.  What really matters is the number of posts someone has.  Below is the default breakdown of member groups, and the number of posts needed to achieve that lofty status!

Code:
[u]Member Group     Posts Required[/u]
Newbie               0 posts
Jr. Member          50 posts
Full Member        100 posts
Sr. Member         250 posts
Expert Member      500 posts

The forum software automatically has "member groups."  I can alter the words used for the groups (for example, instead of calling people "newbie" I can call them "beginner").  Or I can simply designate everyone as "members" and not show any distinction.  We would still be able to see the number of posts a person has.

I just changed the settings to show everyone as "Member," no matter how many posts you have.  If you look at your user information on the left-hand side of the screen, you'll see the change.

I'd be happy to hear what others think of this.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Frank,
To avoid all this, if the win is being shipped from the USA, I will submit a US address.

I'm thinking this is a UPS/Canada issue, not a Festool thing?

If you have a US address, use that for the raffle.

Don't worry about "bugging" me!  This kind of conversation is exactly why I got a select group of people together.

Good move on the "member" designation...we don't need the cutsie tiers for this kind of forum, IMHO.

Jim,
it would not be a a good thing if folks kept posting there once this new space is opened up.

That's my plan.  I'll make the old Yahoo! group read-only once this new space is up and running.  I'll also change the welcome screen to contain a message that reads something like this:

The Festool Owners Group has moved to a new and improved home.  To find us click here.

I'll also ask members to transfer their photos and files from the old group into the new group.  I'd rather have members do it themselves, so people have an opportunity to create interesting posts that contain text and photos together.  That will be better than if I transfer everything myself.  It might take a while for everything to migrate over, but that's all right.

Jim,

once you announce the new board, can you leave the Yahoo archive up and make it "non postable"?

I mean to say this in my last post...When the new group is up and running, I'll lock down postings.  When someone tries to post to the Yahoo group, he/she will receive a message that reads as follows:

This Yahoo group has moved!  Click here to join the new Festool Owners Group.

That way, if people miss the statement on the group home page, they will see it if they try to post.

That should work.
