PEER RATING?

I dunno, but I (personally) don't like it. A rating like this appropriate for those selling in the classified section.

How about a little Peer Pressure?

When was the last time I hears that phrase?

Oh yeah, High School.

Hi all.

Forgive me for making an all of a sudden appearance, I am lurker here most of the time but I have been observing the latest controversy and I noticed  Daviddubya's karma points are in the negative (+9, -12) which  strike me as odd seeing as though Daviddubya's post that I have seen were generally constructive. is there a chance someone is abusing the karma system and if so is there a way to stop it.

You illustrate perfectly why I think this Karma thing, though well intentioned, is a mistake. It presents to the public a very skewed, and as in the example you cite, a very inaccurate, reflection of a person's contributions to this forum.

There is no chance of this.

Members can only vote once every 24 hours, including the administrator.  It would be very difficult for any single person to skew someone's Karma, especially after the system runs for a while.  Because of the voting restrictions, Karma should be a reflection of the total view of the community.

Thanks,
Matthew

Matt,

I respectfully disagree with your statement. It doesn't take much to skew a person's image/name/reputation. "Total view of the community" -  out of the thousands of members here? So if a person thoughtfully and respectfully challenges another person's statement, even if the initial statement is wacky, the responder(??) can get assigned a negative mark/vote/karma point? People's reputations on this or any other forums should not be subjected to the the whims of of any other member, especially  anonymous members.
Wonderful though the Internet is, this is one of the pitfalls/problems of the Net as I see it.
I wish this Karma thing would be reconsidered.

When I went to basic training in Paris Island....after 12 weeks of living together under grueling circumstances, our senior drill instructor put us to a little test.  There were over 80 people in the platoon.  He asked us to simply put down on paper, a vote, for who we liked the most.....AND who we disliked the most.  As the votes were being tallied on a blackboard, it was overwhelming, the clear evidence that I was going to win both categories.  I was stunned...I didn't get it.  The drill instructor simply smiled and said....this is the sign of a good leader...

It wasn't easy getting either side of those votes...I can honestly say that...so in observation...good job Matthew, Per!!

woodtradesman - Thanks for noticing my peer rating.  It is currently dead even at 12 and 12.  I suspect the reason I have been awarded an equal number on each side is my willingness to express my opinion on contentious issues.  I do try to keep my posts civil, regardless of the topic.  I doubt the system is being abused or manipulated.

It just strikes me as odd. Besides that, negative forum crossings appear to have started the 26th of July, its totally possible that some one logged in day since then to get around the 24 hour cycle.

By the way does the karma feature log IP addresses?

I do not like the peer rating. but I hope I don't get a negative rating because I said I dont like it ;D

What do you mean by "forum crossings"?  I enabled Karma yesterday, so no one could have voted before then.  I'm not sure what you mean about someone getting around the 24-hour cycle.  There is no way for members to vote more than once every day for any particular member.

By the way, I can change the frequency setting.  It can be once a week, once a month, or once every hour (i.e., chaos).  I'm thinking once a day allows people to weigh in, keeping the voting moderate.

No, Karma does not record IP addresses.  No one, not even the administrator, can know who voted what.

Thanks,
Matthew

that tosses out that possibility then. forgive me for assuming that the karma system was in place for a while.

Maybe the karma thing is finicky??

If there is no chance of abuse, then how did Rick Christopherson get that big negative number? Did I miss someone's post asking everyone to give him a negative rating? Or maybe his grand total of 13 posts have affected a lot of people in a negative way.

I am definitely confused.

I'll let others weigh in on Rick and how he ended up with that rating.  But I'll say this: It's not because of abuse of the Karma system, since people can only vote once a day.
Although Rick has 13 posts listed under his name, he has actually posted more like 150.  But he recently deleted all his posts, except for those 13.

This Peer rating is ridiculous.

How in the world did Rick get -169 in a 24 hour period? no one is even close to that in total + or -.

What I do know is that you(Matthew) and he recently had some friction??  I have a really......really hard time believing that you had no influence over his rating.  In fact, I have a hard time believing this rating crap is completely anonymous.  Come to think of it, I really don't believe anything anymore.

Answer me this.  A thread is started seeking member feedback regarding Contractor labeling everyones thoughts are entertained and patronized.  However, a controversial thing like Peer Rating just shows up unexpected, that just goes against the grain of this democratic Forum.

Why not just change the Forum to your vision, instead of seeking permission.  Your gonna do it sooner or later anyway.

If you want to charge for membership.... Do it!  BTW I anonymously Donated 10.00 for those individuals seeking fuel for their response after I post this.
If you want to charge for advertising......Do it!
If you want to condescendingly bash Festool.........Do it!
If you want moderators....................Do it!  Actually you really don't for fear of loosing control.

You have earned the right to do as you please with this Forum.  However, if you are heading in the direction of making the Forum a lucrative business you may be your own worst enemy at the moment.

This Puppet Master stuff is old already!

BTW let the negative posting begin.  I'm sure my negs will surpass Rick's by dinner today.

Victor
