a googly is a cricketing term, i will TRY to explain this

the bowler (pitcher) holds the ball in his hand in such a way that the man on strike KNOWS that he is facing a curved ball

the normal "spin" (curve) is away from the strike so he cant make contact

however the bowler (pitcher) turns his wrist at the "very moment" of release

the result is that the curve is reversed, the ball is an "in swinger"

matthew that is "sort of" the dual point of this topic

it refers to your cricketing thing and the fact that per has wrong footed me before

per's googly is calling a "hex wrench" an "allen key"

we in england KNOW that the north americans call it "hex wrench"

the Snap On catalog confirms it..................

AND north americans ALWAYS call them "hex wrenches"

we in britain know them as "allen keys"

now per "dang his ass" goes and calls them "allen keys"

per's ball direction has changed to "in swinger" it is MOST disconcerting

Well ---- getting it from my father ---- I've always called them  an Allen key but mostly an Allen wrench ---- there's a little extra "english" on your googly .

the substitution of the north american word "wrench" for key makes perfect sense

its "allen" (rather than hex) that caught my attention

Must be my Canadian upbringing, but I didn't even realize they were called "hex" keys. Sounds like something from "Bewitched". Or Dungeons and Dragons...

Reminds me of a BBC announcer at a Cricket match, announcing the play by play as the next player stepped up to the "plate"...

...the pitcher is Holding...
...the striker's Willy...

Definately an allen wrench and a hex key.
  We don't pitch googlies.

Jeez,

I was always under the impression a hex key

was the secret code in Latin, Father McMurty mumbled

to start the exorcism.  No?

Never mind the Hex Wench.

That is far to Vulgar for my special case of Tourettes.

Now Googly, threw me. I thought that was just a cute phrase for

her Majesty's search engine.

Stop!! You're both wrong.

It's Allen wrench in the states, but hex key is a lot more descriptive,
though in fairness to the inventor we should say Inbus key.

Read all about it.

Hi,

How about    Allen spanner ?    ;D

I have always called them Allen wrenches.  Here in the USA.

HI,

Makes sense- a spanner is spanning something, a key is going into something.        Lets just make n"inny" and "outy" the new international terms.

"Could I have the 7/8 outy please?"        OR  perhaps  "I need the 5mm  inny."      :D

  Not Knowing, wrenching you apart?

You can use that number, it isn't taken. ;D

could he have a partner, Hex Spanna?

or maybe he gets together with a lady of the night, Ivana Hex, for a little wrenching inny and outy action.....
