Phil's lack of hearing protection in recent Festool UK video productions.

[size=13pt]After viewing some otherwise excellent videos demonstrating the TSC and HKC; I noted that, although Phil makes a deliberate motion to put on safety glasses, it is not obvious that he has hearing protection.

He may have ear plugs inserted, but certainly their 'hidden' use or no hearing protection at all may not be a safety message that Festool UK wishes to promote.

Best wishes.

Can't speak for Phil or German Festool Frank but I find over ear protection and glasses are uncomfortable. I tend to put in a pair of foam disposables in the morning and remove them when I finish work. However I agree mention of hearing protection at the start of corporate videos would be best practice

It may have something to do with the microphone and earpiece setup that Phil and Frank (Festool Germany) are both wearing in their videos, but I agree, perhaps a small note at the start of each video might be a good note.

Also, what's with the gloves?

I don't get on with in ear protection. Over ear protection and safety glasses do take some getting used to. I only get decent ear defenders, 3M usually, they are more comfortable. I usually get Bollé safety glasses with metal arms than can be persuaded (OK then, bent!) to be more comfortable with the ear muffs.

I suffered temporary tinnitus when I was a young and careless motorbike rider and in a rock band - fortunately it is no longer a problem, but it made me quickly realise I could not live with it - so my ears are always well protected. I prefer the temporary discomfort of the muffs! (Is muff even the right word to use in English?.. it is making me think of something else  [eek])

"No muff too tough we dive at five" was a popular t shirt slogan in the 70's [big grin]. I do struggle with the correct placement of the foam plugs as I have severe cauliflower ears from 40 years of rugby. The right one was nearly ripped off and is slightly lower than the left so I have to bend frames as well!

I can't stand ear plugs and muffs get hot. Can't remember the brand and I'm not getting out of bet to check, but the sort I use are a bit like ear plugs on a over head band. Easy put on, take off often as I only wear them when I'm making real noise.

Phil doesn't show us putting on his underwear either.

I'm not sure Festool UK wants to promote a message of going commando. It could result in some nasty wardrobe failures and pinched goods. [eek] [blink] [scared]

Hi
Well spotted i did not have any hearing protection and should have used some. In future videos it will be used and you make a good point about the 'messgae' this conveys.

[member=19746]Untidy Shop[/member] ... about the message ... aren't we getting a bit over-sensitive here?  It's just a video to promote tools, not a politically correct video showing every aspect of a safe working environment.

People should know these things for themselves without constantly having to be reminded about it in every product video you see.

---

I myself wear over-ear protection and safety glasses constantly, and I forget I'm wearing them. I can't stand in-ear plugs though.

"Pardon, I cannot hear you!" [smile]

Am I being over sensitive? Perhaps. I thought about this post for a day before starting it, but in the end I believe it is about corporate responsibility to consumers.

I thank Phil for being up front and making no excuses. It would have been easy for him to say that he had ear buds, or the video production process meant that he had to hear the director at all times (which it wouldn't!).

I cannot wear hearing protection. About 25 years ago I ran a Q-Tip into my right ear to a point the only part out of the ear was what was between my fingers. Hearing protection screws with my balance to a point wearing it is unsafe.

If your wondering----yes, it hurt a lot.

I have my wife sit to my right, that way when I say to her "I didn't hear you" it's the truth.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. It's the first image that popped into my head reading.  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

Perhaps Peter, but I think the issue is consumer safety, it's not about Phil as a person. He is obviously a great representative for Festool UK. There was also probably a film crew of around three, including a producer/manager.

And we would not have had this discussion about hearing protection, nor indeed Going Commando, if this was private.

If it makes us as trade people/woodies all take notice then it all works out fine and there is a use to all of this.
It is important and will be part of the check list in the future.
..........still no chance of 'commando style' though [embarassed]
