The FOG Forum has size limits and recommendations for post attachments and for files uploaded to the the Gallery.   Although they may change in the future, current sizes are...

Attachment Size Limits
  • Each individual attachment can be up to 175 KB
  • You can attach a total of 500 KB per post
  • You can attach up to 5 attachments per post

Recommendations
Please keep photo resolution to about 800x600 in size.  This seems to be a size that provides enough visibility for most members and can be seen without scrolling by users with small screens.

Gallery Size Limits
  • Maximum image height: 1280
  • Maximum image width: 1280
  • Maximum image filesize: 175 KB

Everyone,

Please note that the following changes have been made to the file limits:

Attachment Size Limits for Forum Posts:
Each individual attachment can be up to 125 KB
You can attach up to 10 attachments per post
There is no limit on the number of inline attachments you can make from gallery images

Gallery Size Limits:
Maximum size for each file: 125 KB
Maximum pixel size per file: 2000x2000

Thanks,
Matthew

I am happy to see that 10 attachements are now allowed (that's the number allowed on my two most frequented other forums) and a maximum size of 125 kb is OK (I would like more but 125kb is a little more than the other two forums allow)

But there is a problem.  The 500kb maximum total size of all attachments remains at 500kb and this, in effect, means that I can include only 4 attachments per post.

Is it possible to increase the maximum total size of all attachments  to 1000kb?

Frank,
The subject of attachment limits is something I think about all the time.  Before establishing the current limits, I did some research on other long-standing forums to see what works.

While there is no simple answer to this, the limits of the Festool Owners Group are more generous than almost any other woodworking forum.  Expanding limits is more complicated than it seems at first, because as the forum grows the attachments directory expands at a rate faster than membership suggests.  As soon as limits are expanded, they are fully utilized.

There are two general issues with attachments, not just here but in all Web forums.  First, people don't make enough of an effort to resize their photos when possible.  Whatever the limit is, people tend to use it.  Second, people repost the same photos muiltiple times.  Again, this is general Web behavior, not something limited to the Festool Owners Group.

Now, in almost all cases it is possible to post a large photo, of excellent quality for Web viewing, at or under 100KB (actually, I can do it most of the time in 85KB).  A generous limit (125KB per attachment), gives people enough space to post great photos, but encourages them to put some effort into resizing photos before attaching.  To be specific, the Festool Owners Group attachment directory currently has about 2,500 items.  About 500 of those photos (20%) could be reduced (KB size) by about 50% with no visible difference to the post.

Now, onto your specific comment.  As you state, this forum's 10-attachment limit is more than the other two "frequented" forums, and so is its 125KB per-attachment limit.  You say that the 500KB means you can only have 4 attachments.  But that's assuming someone posting at the upper limit in every attachment.

Also, there is the Festool Owners Group Gallery.  One of the reasons I established the Gallery was to essentially remove attachment limits.  You can upload as many photos as you want to your album in the Gallery (at 125KB each), then use the inline attachment function to add those photos to your posts.  It's easy and works very smoothly.  Using that method, you can include 20, 30, 50, 100... photos to your posts, which is like having an effective limit of 2,500 or 3,750 or 6,250 or 125,000 KB per post!

Your post is a timely question, as I have been looking into expanding the forum's attachment limits.  I'll take this up in a separate discussion, as it is part of a larger effort to expand all forum capacities.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my request so extensively Matthew.  I guess that I will try the gallery mechanism.

Just to comment on two of your statements:

"As you state, this forum's 10-attachment limit is more than the other two "frequented" forums"   Actually I said the 10 limit was the same as the other two forums.

in almost all cases it is possible to post a large photo, of excellent quality for Web viewing, at or under 100KB    I guess that "quality" is in the eye of the beholder.  I do use software to create reduce sized versions of my photos before placing them into documents and onto the web and, to me, the "good" quality cutoff for most photos is from 120 KB to 180 KB.

Frank,

Just curious...  Why do you say that "good quality cutoff for most photos is from 120 KB to 180 KB"?  Are you referring to the pixel density not being high enough, height & width limits the overall size too much, or a combo of the two?

Thanks,

Dan.

Dan, it's a combination of everything.  By the way, more often then not I clip most pictures before reducing thier resolution.

The best way to see what I'm talking about is to browse through the Member Projects board.  There are great quality photos posted there that are under 100KB (sometimes even down around 75KB).  Also, you'll see how members make use of the Gallery to post discussions with more than 10 photos.

Just reading this thread makes me see what a thoroughly decent bloke you are Matt. You really are devoted to this forum....what do you do for a living??

if your still using xp theres a power tool in the MS xp windows site for down loading.  the tool will allow you to resize a picture [while retaining the orginal] and it save it as a small[after file name].  this will be the right size for posting here.

Hi,

There are a bunch of active photo threads  right now. But since this has to do with the size of photos I thought this would be the best place to post.  As nice as the really large pics are to look at. I much, much, much prefer small thumb nails that can be enlarged if desired. The big beautiful pics take too long to load. Even though I can start reading a thread before all the pics are loaded it continually jumps as the pics come in. Very frustrating.  I have to say that many times I have had to skip reading a new post to a thread simply because I do not want to weight five  minutes for it to load.
I have a question related to this also-  How can I dump the pics from a quote so as not to have them posted over and over again in the same thread? I mean when I post with a quote someone else has pics attached to.

You can log in as a guest (that is, don't log in) and you won't be presented with as many photos. Log in for real if you want to post.
