Some forums on the web have a ‘Like’ button option next to the quote button for readers to click on. It gives them a way to show appreciation to to forum member for their comment or pictures of their project, without using more bandwidth of a regular reply or quoting a post.

Would it be possible to do this for FOG?

Conmpletely useless feature. This forum is about communication, not a popularity contest.

And as for communication goes, it works perfectly.

And like buttons would affect your posting on the forum negatively how?

With less and less posts on the forum people seeing that their comment or opinion was appreciated might help.

People can't always be bothered to reply just to say they like it agree, but a post with a big number of likes shows others that many are with the poster...

I went looking to see if that feature is available.  It isn’t natively.  Instead there is only the “karma” feature which was once tried and turned out to be a disaster.  I don’t see that coming back.

There is a hack (modification) available that seems to be able to add that function but right now I really don’t see that IT resources will probably be available to implement that.  I could be wrong though.

Are you here to talk about tools or to get your personality validated?

People who crave for personal attention have many outlets on the internet, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more. But there's little meaningfull communication there, single sentence posts at kindergarten level. Jolly good fun.

The "like" button is a stock feature on social media sites, it tends to promote us vs them thinking and the development of cliques of like thinkers who respond reflexively to their "allies".  It has no place on a site like this where the focus is information sharing and technical exchange.

My exact feelings. I don't need to get the approval of the "cool kids" for what I post.

Yes my feelings too. This is not FB. In the distant past the FOG did actually have such a similar feature. On many posts it was useless as often there were more likes than actual written opinion and information. Hence I and many others called for it to end.

I can't recall that.

I also don’t remember that option. I remember a long discussion on the +1.
Rick.

Wow, so much push back at me being able to like your posts.... I'm literally not on any social media sites and I resent the posts suggesting anyone who wants 'likes' is just in need of some validation.

I'll just shut up then :)

I don’t it’s like that at all Mr B......everyone is just expressing an opinion of an idea/suggestion you came up with.....Think of it as a design detail that you just scrapped...it’s just healthy FOG conversations....nothing personal...I’ve read many of your helpful posts, so one got shut down...don’t feel you have to shut up and go away

Rick.

Around that same time there were some complaining about the use of signatures. Both discussions seemed quite comical to me.

Thank you [member=41086]Vondawg[/member] appreciated.

I meant i'd shut up in this thread:) The OP and I are clearly in the minority on this subject. I'll find a way to deal with it  [big grin]

Cheers

Personally I’d be fine with a like or thank button, no one is required to use it, if people don’t like it then don’t use it. But Peter’s technical comments are probably most important, hacking in a feature can make future platform updates more complicated, the stability of the forum software is the top priority.

It is far too mindless to click a "like" button, but no add anything to the conversation. Virtual "likes" already exist in the form of view and reply counts for each thread. The mindless of scrolling down a list of replies clicking a button is absolutely worthless.
