I made this planter box for my wife.  She has starting growing vegetables and needed more room.  I got enough wood to make a second one.

It's made from cedar fence pickets (from HomeDepot) and a redwood 2x4, and lots of screws.  To get good utilization of the wood, I limited the length + width to the length of the picket, but at $2 each, it's not that big of a deal.

Looks great! I’m about to make some for my sister and was thinking of using fence pickets as well.

Nice look planter.  Just a suggestion you may want to remove a couple bottom boards to allow drainage.  We used wire mess and some landscape fabric to hold in the soil.

- how about the depth of soil? - I noticed professional built / commercial raised beds seem shallower for all the obvious advantage of that.

I’m certainly no expert.  Our beds are shorter than Bob’s.  We are limited to more non root veggies.  His beds,  if they use the full depth may work better for carrots, potatoes, etc.

Hans,

I had the same question for my wife before I built it.  She wanted it to have the deeper depth.  I don't argue with my client :-)
