A Platform Bed.

[attachimg=1]

I will attach some pictures of the progress, and the headboard will be coming later this month as I get time build. This is a pretty basic bed made of Eastern Walnut and Poplar. I used the DF500 For joining pieces together, and I will pocket screw the feet on in case I want to take them off later.

This is the underside of the bed. Tomorrow I will be sanding and attaching legs.

I don't know if your planing on storage underneath but Rockler sells a great set of hydraulic lift arms that make it a finger tip lift that I added to an older model that makes storage easy and practical .I had no drawers and decided I didn't need any with such easy access to the whole space .  Chris

Yeah that sounds like a good idea if we needed the storage under the bed. I will keep that in mind for my son's bed that I am going to be making.

Here is some progress being made

Well here is the finished product... well at least the bed for the mattress is finished, I will be building the head board in the coming months.

Beautiful bed. I will be making my fiancé and I are bed in the coming months. Thanks for posting and springing some ideas!

Looks great!  I like platform beds but I build traditional looking beds.  This one is much more modern and lower to the floor.  Nothing wrong with that.  For my designs, I replace the box spring with slats about 12 inches wide of 3/4 plywood.  I've used narrower ones but didn't like the movement when you sit on them.  I used a totally solid platform on a couple beds but we like a little give.  So on the most recent I went to 12 inch slats and it was about right for us.

This looks real nice. It apprears to me that the platform will be plenty stiff due to the split slats and the location of the center feet. I'd love to hear how well this design supports you and yours. This project is on my list to do also.

It is perfect for us a bit more on the firm side, but depending on the mattress it could be good for a large range. My biggest concern is gravity for such a large frame, I want this piece to last several generations.

Head Board to Come

I plan on getting some more walnut and building the Head Board in July. I want to give a big nod to Jory Brigham Design for the inspiration. The headboard will feature an offset vertical section and horizontal boards, as well as two floating end tables, which I may add drawers under. I really wish you could get Thin Edge Knobs (George Nelson) for a lot less, at 70 bucks a knob I may just route a lip under the drawer.

So here is the beginnings of the head board. I intended on doing more pictures but I got focused and didn't stop much.

That's some beautiful grain you've got going on.  Can't wait to see the finished product.  Thanks for posting.

Very Nice.  It's design is reminiscent of Jory Brigham's "Organic Bed".  Are you going to sculpt contours with a grinder or leave it flat?  I'm interested in this thread, I have a platform bed planned to build in the not so distant future.  Keep on posting progress pics!

Edit:  Sorry.  I saw after I posted you already made reference to Jory Brigham.

Sorry the bed has been done for quite some time. Here is a final picture.[attachimg=1]

Really beautiful work.

How long did it take you to complete this project?
Did you start by doing a 3D model?

I don't have the computer program that does modeling, but i would like to get one. I just saw the bed the Jory Brigham made and drew up plans to make this one. it didn't take too many hours i just didn't have consistent time to work on it. I'd say 25-30 hours of work.
