I am trying the Platin 2 abrasive pads for the first time on Doug Fir and Sapele door jambs and casing. 500, 1000, 2000. The first go is good, but the pads seem to quickly loose their tooth. This surprises me. These things are sooo expensive, I really hoped they worked! for more than a minute. The spongy backer is nice, but the loss of tooth is a problem. The dust collection merely seems to hold the dust in the pad, contributing to its lack of tooth. I have not found much online re: how to use these things, other than the Wood Whisperer polishing a very tiny tiny project. I am in the real world, building a home with 77 windows, all cased with hardwood. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Platin 2 is a niche product for a very small audience. I hardly know which even. It is for when your sanding needs to be so fine it starts to become polishing.
It is not really suited for your use, when working on wood for a home, you'd better use Granat.

I've used Platin on acrylic headlight covers and on epoxy coverings for slab surfaces. Platin is really used to just remove the previous sanding marks...get in & get out then go up another grit level.
Platin loads up because the material it removes is so fine, vacuum/clean/wash the Platin disc and it will be useable again.

I'm guessing this is a Stain Grade Job? yes? no? With Alex on the Platin 2, since I don't know if you are trying to buff a clear finish to a higher level or just sand bare wood, I'd go with Granat and what ever grit is correct for your job.
If you sand to too high a grit, you may have issues with staining if you've closed off the pores of the wood too much. Can you elaborate on why you picked Platin 2 in the first place, it is a rare Abrasive in the Festool Line up.... [huh]
