Platte River Engineering, Casper WY rubber bumpers

I’ve bought these rubber bumpers from Platte River Engineering, Casper, Wyoming.

Does anyone know if they are still in business?  Their website does not work.

I used to get these rubber bumpers from them.  They install in a 0.187” hole, and never seem to get lost.  If anyone knows where to get these, I would appreciate that information.

I have plenty of 3M’s self-adhesive Bump-ones, but they don’t stay put as well as the Platte River version.

I do not know about Platte River being in business but what you’re looking for are called stem bumpers.

Thanks.  I will check them out. 

I found plenty of clear vinyl types.  And plenty of rubber to install in a through hole in metal or plastic. 

I found a few that looked like they would work, but were $0.50 each.

I paid about $10.00 or $12.00 for 200 back when. 

The 3M bump-ons were originally made to be a cushion between table bases and glass table tops and excel at that.  Then they were appropriated by the picture framing industry for backs of picture frames and they worked well for that.

But for everything else, not great.  The adhesive dries out or the vinyl loses its friction.

Drilling a 5mm or 3/16” hole and pushing in the rubber was far more permanent.

Thanks for that information.  I found a bunch with “push in rubber bumpers”.  But as i mentioned above, most are for through holes in sheet metal or plastic. 

I did find clear ones on Amazon for $0.06 each ($6.00 per hundred).  Cheap enough.  I think I will buy them and see how they work.

I’m pretty sure that the ones I have were for 5mm also, but work fine in 3/16” because of the ribbed shaft.

5mm = 0.196
3/16” = 0.187”

The smooth shaft versions would probably need a 5mm drill (which I have).

The problem with the clear vinyl versions is that they can practically weld themselves onto surfaces if left under pressure for extended periods of time.

Years ago, I built a coffee table with a glass top over a display tray.  The plan was to re-arrange the display every few years.  After the first 4 or 5 years, I went to lift off the glass top and could not.  I tried gently prying it, and then I tried tapping in wedges.  In each case, I reached a point where I was afraid that I would shatter the glass.

I am convinced, that if I had the black rubber versions, that would not have happened.

I also have a clear vinyl sheet designed to rest on desktops to give a slightly softer writing surface.  It has fully bonded with the oil-based poly finish beneath.  The desk was several years old when I got the topper.  Before that I had a desk blotter for that same purpose. 

In any case, I’m not a fan of the clear vinyl bumpers except for the backs of picture frames.  And even there, I would prefer the felt pads (which basically disappeared from the market once 3M’s clear bumpons arrived.)

It's not the color of the bumper material, it's the composition of the bumper material that matters. Vinyl will very agressively stick to glass, silicone will not. I've used both materials to protect glass table tops.

I've even attached vinyl pads to a stainless frame using the PSA adhesive on the bottom of the pad. A year later when I attempted to remove the glass top, the vinyl pads stayed with the glass but released from the stainless.

If you're looking for felt pads with PSA, Shepherd Hardware still produces them. The smallest diameter they offer is 3/8". I know Menards sells them.
