Plywood Desk Question

Hey everyone.  I have been looking at various projects to make a "study" desk for my son and I think I have a winner.  It is made of plywood, and is slick and sleek.  I do have one question as to how you think they made the "bends and curves"  I am assuming that they manufactured the "strips" to glue up and that is very cool, but I want to replicate that as I don't have the time to sink into that effort.  Do you think that using Dominos and ply sheets, then rounding over the inside and outside corners would be solid enough?  I plan on doing the overhead bookshelf, so i think it would be fairly solid...

not nearly as pretty, but also a ton less time consuming.

cheers!

Do you plan to paint or finish? That might effect the method and materials.

Hey Seth,

I most likely will just throw some clear coat on it.  Just to protect.  It is more of a utilitarian desk than anything else (he is 6).  Something that he will be able to use and not take up space.... and most importantly, it is just HIS.  Not his sisters, not his mums, etc.

i realize that it will show joints and such, and am not too concerned about that.

Thanks,

Bryan

My guess is it's probably veneered after the "shape" was formed. Core is probably some kind of plastic or PVC core w/ steel for strength.

I'm not a hater but it looks useless.
Nowhere for a mouse, pad of paper, nothing.
Left arm would have to be tucked in.
PC requires no power cord?
No study light? No drawer?
Desks haven't changed much in 2000 years for a reason.
Keeping it positive, I did like the "study cubicles" at our local community college.
Then again where is his study materials get stored when he walks away?
.
Make him something nice and if ya want I'll send a free desk sign that says "Billy's Desk"

I love the creativity! You can add a stand for the mouse pad and build it accordingly. I think a clear wax shellac would look great and protect fairly well.
