I stupidly used the scrubbie side of the sponge when I washed my wifes car. I scratched the hell out of the hood. Can someone tell me how to polish the scratches out with my old style Rotex 150?

I also would be extremely interested in a solution for exactly the same reason!

I would post your question on Autogeek.net  Those guys really know their stuff.

Joinery,

You should be able to do it.  Here is thead that I posted on talkFestool: http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/other-projects/1873-polishing-your-car-rotex-part-1-a.html (part 1) and http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/other-projects/1874-polishing-your-car-rotex-part-2-a.html (part 2).  Also, you may find Laurie's (Hasslefactor) thread about polishing her boat with an RO150 very useful: http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/festool-tools/1864-hello-gelcoat-meet-rotex.html .

I think there is at least one thread here on FOG about polishing your car with an RO150.

Regards,

Dan.

I have done it with my ro150 but I used the Festool range of cutting compounds which I don't think are available in the US.  I presume you are in the US as you call it a "hood" & not by the proper name "bonnet"  [poke]  [big grin]

I did manage to do it quite successfully but I don't feel qualified giving advise on it as I would hate to make it worse.  I'm sure there are some members on here that can help you though.

i would be inclined to try and polish it out by hand before reaching for the rotex. There are plenty of compounds out there you can try on it.

Go to Zaino Store and take a look around.  I've been using their products exclusively for about 7 years on vehicles that I really like to have looking good and there's no comparison.  Grab some of the Z-18 claybar and a bottle of Z-PC Fusion and go to work with your Rotex and a foam pad.  Then finish off with either the Z-2 for light colored paint or Z-5 for dark cars and sit back and wonder how something so easy can look so good.

Here's some pictures of my black truck when I got finished doing the Zaino routine.  It had been severely damaged (clear coat only) after getting behind a semi carrying sludge from a boiler.  Think little white chips in the clearcoat all over.

Is that carpet in the bed?

How do you like it? How do you keep it clean?

I would highly recommend checking out Autopia Forum.  I used to own show car detailing business and if the scratches are deep enough to feel with your finger nails, it would take some serious work to repair it.  If it is just general hazing, you can get it out with wet sanding by hand, polishing compound and water on lamb pad with orbital sander/polisher.

How bad is the scratch?

Yes it is and it cleans up rather easily with a car wash pressure sprayer.  I like it very much as it protects so much better for the types of items I carry in the back end.  I actually have a very dry, Gemtop tonneou that you can only see (barely) in one of the photos with the truck in the garage, so it isn't in the weather much at all.  I just didn't have it on the truck for some of the photos.

It's a bedrug from Bedrug.com.  I considered getting one for my truck but it's overkill in my case.  The bedrug has thick foam pleats to fill the long grooves in the truck's bed so it's one flat surface.  I don't remember who, but a competing company also sells upholstered boxes for both sides of the bed.

Do you have any photos of the scratches?  and have you tried to correct them with your Ro150?
