Polishing tile

Got some tile, black in color with whitish veins, 12 x 12  on a fireplace hearth.  There is a stain which I think is a vinegar splash. Yes vinegar, as in vinegar and oil dressing.  I am thinking that I should work on it with my ets 150.  My question would be, what pad and what contact/working materials should/could I use?  Buffing pads, polish, etc. I do not want to dig the tile out and try to match.

What type of tile? Is it marble or granite?

Before you go taking a sander/buffer to it I would try these:
