I have a Mahogany table top that measures 3.5'x11' and is 1-3/4" thick.

The finish started with a waterbased grain filler, then sanding sealer and 5 coats of the waterbased poly brushed on.

Then two more coats of the waterbased poly were sprayed on.

The finish is gloss.  The last coat was sprayed this past Sunday.

I would like to polish or wax it to retain the gloss and get a super smooth feel, removing the slight gritty feel it has now.

What grit and what type of wax or compound should I use?

Thanks!

It sounds as if the poly needs to be sanded down a little, perhaps with Platin 2 1000. Use the RO mode, and go up to Platin 2 2000. After cleaning the surface, you can lay down a wax layer (although it should not be necessary) and buff it with the Rotex in geared mode (not RO).

There is some excellent information on polishing and waxing in these two brochures. (The second brochure is two large to attach here so I have added a link to it.)

What I've had success with, is to start with 400 brillant, then I change to Mirka Abranet 600, 800, 1000 all on fine sanding mod. Make sure you wipe down surface between grits. Then in rotary mod I use Platin 1000, 2000 and then 4000. This will give you a high satin finish. You can then polish or wax to get your final gloss. I've had good luck with Menzerna PO91E polish. Just a suggestion but I would wait a full week before you start the process, make sure your finish is fully cured.
