Just curious how many of you have accounts on Facebook, Google and/or Twitter and would consider using your account credentials on those platforms to log into another website. Many sites offer this capability. It just keeps you from having to set up and remember credentials for dozens of sites.

For instance, would you log into the Festool USA website with your Facebook account? Please share your response using the poll option above. Check all that apply.

Thanks,
Shane

I myself never would use the Twitter,Facebook, & Especially Google  to log in
I'm not fond of all tracking that is being done on these 3 & logging in thru all 3 is letting them track everything you post ,
that also gets shared to many different entities who one may not that info to shared with  [mad]

IMO

I will use Facebook to log onto sites, but I have not put any personal info on my Facebook account, even my picture.  I only use it to follow a few others on Facebook, and never use it to communicate.

Thanks for the response thus far. I added another option: I'd prefer the site to have its own login.

Just saw the new option. I voted for signing on through thr FOG. Just don't use the other platforms that much.

I never use that sort of option to sign into other sites.  One of the things that I enjoy so much about being a part of, but most importantly visiting this site is its independence from outside advertising and other stuff.

FOG   I use facebook only for family related posting and dont visit sites that want a facebook or google login in.............

My Facebook account has been hacked which led to gmail being hacked. Took several weeks to fix. I only use Facebook to look at other posts. I would like to keep FOG separate.

Much the same as others....Don't trick or "tweet".....no facebook.....or any other social media....been around computers since the early 80's....while all of the social media platforms have their place, I don't subscribe....I prefer to type (or bookmark) my sites so as not too be redirected....sorry for sounding paranoid, but have spent too much time in my life curing virus's on family's PC's.....cuts into my free woodworking time....

This is my view also.

Shane, I'd like to ask what's in it for the sites (the FOG in this case) that use these log in options and what info is shared?

I would & will never login to any other site using my google or facebook accounts.
No way, no how.

Brice, while I believe it's possible to offer these options for the FOG, I was really consider it more for the Festool USA website. With each of these, the privacy policy would need to be reviewed to determine exactly what's shared by default.

I certainly understand the privacy and other concerns, especially with some of the recent news headlines. That's why I asked. To see if it was worth the effort to offer it. For the user, it's a matter of convenience vs. potential privacy concerns.

I think I quickly see a trend forming... [wink]

In the case of Facebook, for instance, your privacy settings for your account determine what information is shared with other applications (or websites in this case).

Logging in to another site using Facebook

Facebook Platform lets you log into other applications and websites using your Facebook account. When you log in using Facebook, we give the site your User ID (just like when you connect with any other application), but we do not share your email address or password with that website through this process without your permission.

If you already have an account on that website, the site may also be able to connect that account with your Facebook account. Sometimes it does this using what is called an "email hash", which is similar to searching for someone on Facebook using an email address. Only the email addresses in this case are hashed so no email addresses are actually shared between Facebook and the website.

I totally agree with Peter.

Also Twitter share may leave FOG exposed to the 'whackos'!
And, I am sure most would agree, the only advertising we wish to see is for a certain German tool company.

Yeah, until they change their policy again without telling you and opt you into some privacy violating new default. No thanks. I will avoid anything that links to FB.

+1

But Festool know all this of course - therefore their behaviour (wrt to Facebook etc)
is bordering on disingenuious.
Can't even have a crack at 'winning' a Kapex - unless 'liked' via Facebook.

It will happen, sooner or later; I cannot be the only one to have noticed
the increasing 'pressure' to link FOG with Facebook.

For all I know, Festool are nuturing links with the NSA as well.

If at all possible, I use site specific usernames and passwords. If I'm forced to use a Facebook/Google/Twitter account, I'll think twice about signing up; it would have to be something I couldn't get anywhere else.

I use a Password Manager (RoboForm) to keep track of all my credentials, and use unique passwords for every site.

I worry that Facebook/Google/Twitter are heavily targeted platforms for cracking/stealing credentials, and once you've had your account on one of those platforms hacked, then every site that uses it as a login option is essentially open too.

I'm in Australia but from what I have heard the NSA (and other countries equivalents) dont do a lot of nurturing.. rather they do sophisticated lurking without the tedious necessity of creating an account or logging in  [wink] [scared] [wink]

I'm pretty sure that the Orwell's Big Brother from 1984 would be considered an amateur by today's standards.. after all these guys business is secrecy so what we end up hearing about is only the surface of te tip of the iceberg.

Am I sounding paranoid .. I didn't mean to I suppose we should just let them catch us all being model citizens  [big grin]

Hi Shane
[2cents] Like others have posted I do use facebook and to a lesser extent google yet I prefer to log into different sites using different credentials. Facebook is great at what it does but in the end I am the commodity they are selling (someone once said if you are not paying for the product you are the product!) one of the things I don't like about it is that FB wants to take it on itself to post to my wall,or to "track" my interests so it can foist or target advertising on me according to what I interact with.

have fun with your market research

Cheers

Andrew

I want separate logins for every website I use. There's enough tracking on the internet already, it's getting out of hand.

NSA snooping is the big story at this moment, but of course the problem is by no means confined to such agencies alone. If you use the same name across multiple websites, everybody can follow you and get all your private details by simply googling you. Not good.

I've got nothing to hide, but that doesn't mean I want it all out there for anybody to look into. Last thing I need is for somebody to google my name and find: "Oh look, Alex got a house full of expensive Festools".

There are a couple of websites/forums out there I would like to particpate in, but I won't because they require you to sign up with a facebook or google account. I really detest it.

I, for one (of many), refuse to use social media due to concerns for the security of private, personal information.  Should I choose to share some data, I'll direct it to only those persons that should have access to that data, and nowhere else.
