possible incompatibility issue/Kapex UG?

I'm planning on picking up a Kapex UG to mount my Kapex saw on,  but I also want to use the crown stop extensions...  someone told me these cannot be used together and that I should use a Kapex MFT if I need to use the crown stops...  is there any truth to this or is someone just confused / ill-advised?
I hope that is the case, as I really like the UG stand/extensions  and even though the little crown extensions are $180 per.pair,  I AM buying a pair to add onto my Kapex

I'm leaning towards what I have been told here,  because the UG's extension set appear to fasten to the kapex  in the same slots the crown extensions would attach to...

so unless I am missing something here,  it looks like I would need to spend a weekend on the mill to MAKE a pair of crown stop extensions that fix to the UG rails,  -but  ummm...  that will cost a hell-of-a-lot more than $180...

Has festool addressed this issue?

The crown stops will NOT fit the ug stand and NO festool has not addressed issue

As it's not really an issue here in Europe only in the USA I'm afraid

I have not purchased the crown stops due to the fact that they don't work for smaller pieces of crown.  To cut a return or a 6 inch piece for instance, you need to be cutting that off of a much, much longer piece.  I just make my own out of a 3/4 inch thick piece of plywood.  If you use extension fences you can always double stick blocks on the extensions to compensate for the added height on the base of the saw.

I think JMB and his "crew" should work to popularize crown molding in the UK.  Then we might see a different solution.

I'm certainly looking for a new stand for my Kapex...  The UG is not out of the question...  I have been running crown since I was a teenager (+ that's a long time ago!  [laughing]    )
and I've yet to use a "crown stop"  -but since everything else from Festool has worked so well for me,  I had been intending to pickup a set and give 'em a try...

afraid I am going to have to keep looking for awhile before I make any purchase decisions...
as for now, I am using a DeWalt folding saw stand,  which while it WORKS,  -it just looks awfully out of place...  I have Festool EVERYTHING -and a Festool saw stand is what I would most greatly prefer...

Do the measurement tapes on the UG move,  or are they set to stay?

I am wondering if I should machine a pair of extension-extensions which would accept accessories such as (crown stops)  AND allow the UG's extension to fix to the "extension-extensions" ??
but...  the UG's measuring tapes would need to compensate for the 4-6"  extensions on ea. side...    can they move to allow something like this?

I like the UG-Kapex wheeled stand but not the extensions.  Not on my list!  [dead horse]

No they cant you will have to remove and stick another measuring tape OR stick a it over the top of the existing!

With all due respect, the Kapex UG stand does work with the Crown Stops.

The new Side Extensions don't work with the Crown Stops because the table extensions that the Crown Stops sit on are using the V-Groove that the new extensions need to attach.

You can use the UG cart, the Crown Stops w/ Table Extensions, and the previous Extension Wings. Unfortunately, there isn't an elegant transportation solution for these extensions but a carpenter could certainly make one.

Hey guys, quick tip!

The extension arms of the UG Cart can be turned around and used on the opposite side. For example: the left extension can be turned so it's facing backward and attached to the right side of the Kapex. By doing this, the material stop in the back of the extension becomes a crown stop on the front of the extensions.
If you're looking to purchase the stand, purchasing the whole set up with the arms is the way to go. $200 savings!

Hi,

Happy first post  [smile]

Now that is an interesting idea ! So when you set up you would move the extension to the correct spacing from the fence for what ever size crown  being cut?

Seth

Pete Halle or was it Shane?   I think it was Shane posted the idea on turning the ug arm extensions around to act like crown stops a while ago in another topic.

I can't remember nor find the topic it was posted in!  I'm sure some one remembers where its posted.

Jmb

It was posted more than once before...

It's pretty clumsy though it can be useful.

Tom

SRSemenza,

Thank you! Correct, you just move it to accommodate to the size of your crown.

Sorry guys, I didn't realize it was already a previous discussion.

I believe it was posted in the thread from the JLC 2011 show in Rhode Island.  That was when it was first mentioned on here.  Someone came up to Shane and showed it to him at the show.  We discussed the positive and negative aspects shortly thereafter.

No problem!

I would much rather have someone accidentally post a duplicate than assume that it has been posted here before and then nobody finds out.

But you have an assignment.  Go to the beginning of the forum and read the last two years worth of posts tonight.  Then another two years worth tomoorow...

Just kidding of course!  [poke]

[eek] Oh, Jeez! I better get started, good thing it's the weekend!

Have a good weekend guys.  [smile]
