Powermatic Planer & Drum Sander

I’m in the very beginnings of researching buying a planer and drum sander. I believe most of the work will be on wider hardwoods(2” Walnut, Cherry, Hickory etc) .

My initial  interest is in the Powermatic 209HH planer and Powermatic DDS225 Drum Sander.

Do any of you have these machines or use/experience with them and will you provide honest positive/Negative feedback.

I’m a very simple hobbyist and don’t plan on any commercial use of these machines at all.

I have the 209 and absolutely love it. I have zero complaints, and it's a remarkable machine. I have the 230v 5HP Single-Phase version. Happy to answer any questions. You can see it in operation here. I'm planing 8/4 ash for some bar tops I was building.

Have you challenged the machine with a wide piece, how did it perform.

What type/style sander do you use and do you have any thoughts on the PM25” sander?

I did buy it with the upgraded helical head. So far, I've run 17.5" of hardwood (oak, ash, cherry) and it hogs it off fine. There are two speeds, and even the faster speed leaves it smooth. Be sure to only change speeds while it's running. I have a SuperMax drum sander so don't really have any thoughts on the PM.

I’ve got the  Powermatic 15HH planer, it is a superb machine.

Ive been making a dining table for our deck these last few days, from 4” x 2”New Guinea Rosewood stock. I ran about about 34 linear metres of stock through the jointer, bandsaw, table saw and planer over the last 3 days (all Powermatic gear), and it’s come out great. Filled the bin on the DC.

Sounds beautiful(I’m new and am still amazed of all the woods I’ve not heard of). I’m at amm no point of needing machines now including a jointer . My buddy tells me the PM is considered at/near the top.

The other thing I’m considering is new vs used(newer machines by hobbyists). Example there is a guy that has a 15hh that he bought a few months ago asking $2,375. I also see the 209 for $4,000.

Have you had all of your PM very long and any issues or advice is appreciated

For what its worth, I'm in Pittsburgh and have the Powermatic DDS225 available for sale with around $600 of abrasives, and I also have a 15HH, and PM 1300 for sale if interested.  I have the 209HH, and a few other Powermatics, but they are 3 phase. Last year I bought a small building and relocated the equipment there.  It's beginning to look like I'll be selling the building now, so the equipment is likely available.  Thanks, Steve

I bought my PM jointer, planer and table saw used 2 years ago, they are 6 years old now. All working very well and no issues at all. I sanded and repainted the base 6” of all 3 machines as the previous owners cat apparently peed on them all the time and they had rusted a bit! Anyway 4 hours work and good as new. I paid about 60% of retail for them.

The bandsaw (14”) was new 2 years ago.

I use a Powermatic 8” HH jointer and a 20” Powermatic HH thicknesser all the time to dimension rough wood. I have a 16” drum sander that sees very little use. The wood comes off the HH machines needing only a light sanding.
