Pre-finishing Ipe Decking - What product to use???

I'm starting a deck build using Ipe decking. Before I install the Ipe, I wanted to pre-finish 4 sides and I'll be sealing the ends with Anchorseal as each board is cut.

What stain would you recommend?

The most commonly mentioned finishes seem to be Messmers UV Plus for Hardwood Decks, Woodrich Hardwood Wiping Stain, Ready Seal and TWP 100.

Also, I'm looking for a penetrating stain and not a film build product. I'm well aware that Ipe doesn't like to accept stain because it's so dense and the high amount of natural oils in the wood.

Here's the process I'm planning on using for staining the Ipe. Sand with 80 grit, wipe down with acetone, apply stain and wipe off excess stain about 10-15 min later.

I have built a bunch of pie an other tropical hardwood decks. I see no point in pre finishing all 4 sides, never had and issue just doing the top.

All the oils will eventually collect dirt. I have had no better performance than building a film with twp.

I've been wanting to try out Ipe Oil.  It gets good reviews and you can order it online through Home Depot or Amazon.

I've had excellent luck with Armstrong-Clark oil based transparent colors for hardwood.  I built several sets of IPE landscape/trellis walls for my desert yard.  They get full sun all day and extreme heat, and this stuff keeps the Ipe looking like new.  I talked to the Manufacturer direct and they recommended to use their "Mahagony" transparent color for Ipe as the clear product won't prevent fading.  I applied it about 6 months after the walls were built because they were already starting to fade.  The color was an excellent choice as it made the walls look new again.  It has been a year and I'm sure I can go another year before recoating.

It is a penetrating oil and doesn't build film which was important to me.  I have no experience with Ipe Oil, but am super happy with this stuff.

Owatrol Seasonite then Owatrol  Textrol works well on ipe. Although I have a ipe deck here in the uk and I've never put anything on it in 14 years.

Thanks for all the advice. There's a good chance that I might not be able to pre-finish the decking due to time constraints.

I think I'll get some samples of Armstrong Clark and Messmer's.

The more transparent the product is the less UV protection you get, a fact of life.  Semi-transparent is better than transparent and semi-solid stains are better than semi-transparent.

Yeah great advice, just NOT for ipe.

You dont use any old  emi solid on ipe, that's just wrong information.

Use Rosewood oil or something like that. Something made specially for oily, dense tropical woods. Penofin probably makes some of the best:

True but that was general information but even the best state, 1 - 2 years on horizontal surfaces depending on use and weather exposure.
