Probable a stupid question

But, I have read a number of comparisons between the TS55 and the Mafell MT55 especially about the better dust control of the Mafell.  Many have commented that it may be due to the hole in the side of the TS55.  Here’s the stupid question has any one tried covering it up say with a card flap hinged with tape so it’s easy to move out of the way?

I bought the Festool 491750 Cover Plate for my saw. Dust collection is great now.
I haven't used the splinter guard with it though as it covers where the knob secures it.

I will probably get skewered for saying this, but, I have owned both the TS-55  and  the mt-55 and , Honestly, I did not see that much difference in the dust collection between the two. [unsure] Both did an excellent job in my opinion.

I thought I saw someone a while back 3d print an insert for that. Why there isn't a commercially available little clip in piece is beyond me. The Festool cover plate strikes me as a complex solution for a problem that begs an simpler solution. All that said, I've rarely had issues. A couple times when using it in mine or my brother's house, I covered it with masking tape.

I use tape on my tracksaw but

I like a lot of what Ben does! So I’m tempted pay $20 to support him :)

I have the Festool „plate“ which is originally meant to allow you to set a distance to a neighboring surface, mostly a wall, to cut even „relief“ cuts around flooring.

It covers the hole and also gives you a better cover of the right side of the blade, improving dust collection, in my experience.

As mentioned above, it blocks the access to the knob for the tear-guard. BUT it is easily modified to allow all functions with a small modification by a hacksaw. ;)

Most of the times I use a 3D printed coverplate, which also does the job. Before I used tape, or even a piece of laminated paper, which was held by the tear-guard knob.

All works. Pick the solution you like best. :)

Me too. I leave it on my ATF 55. Since it projects below the guide rail it further improves dust collection over just covering the hole.

The plate also provides a place to mark the location of the blade when doing pocket cuts. I use a small square block of wood to transfer the start and stop points from the kerf to the plate. With a nice square line going almost all the way to the work surface it’s easy to avoid parallax error and hit the exact mark.

I found a design on Thingiverse and 30 mins later I have a cover :)

This is an interesting post as I have been using the TS55 for many years with zero dust issues. I get a puff of dust at the very end of a cut. I found that placing a block of wood in front of the saw blocks the puff from spreading the dust.

[member=67145]Dusty.Tools[/member] is it that design Dust Cap?

I'm asking because the picture provided is showing something slightly different.

Same concept different design, not that there are many variables with something like this :)

I also have a textured base for my 3D printer which gives the outside finish a really nice texture.

A bunch of people asked if I could make them one :)

Drop me a DM if you are interested. I put a listing on ebay but I'll give you a FOG special price!

Can you share the 3d printer file so i can have my buddy make one for me?

Getting back to the OP’s question, the Mafell is better in this respect because the blade is better encapsulated.  There is the hole in the cover plate discussed above, but on the left side of the blade there is a much larger area that is open on my TSC.  Ideally you would want as much air drawn in as possible where the blade teeth are exiting the wood.  The other openings reduce the air velocity near the teeth.

When I get some time this weekend I’ll post a few pics so you can see what I’m talking about.  But I will add the dust collection on both saws are excellent as long as the blade stays encapsulated during your cut.  That means sacrificial board underneath (not open air) and if you can manage a sacrificial back stop at the end of your cut that will greatly limit dust escape.
