Hey team,

One of the first things on this forum I saw when I just started 2 months ago into woodworking was people making accessories for their MFT/3. I wanted to be one of those people! This should come in handy space-wise. Although I also just ordered a second MFT/3 from my [now] good friend Bob Marino!

Simple weekend project.

See the burning on the wood? Does that mean my saw is too fast or too slow?

Matt

Cherry is one of the woods most prone to burn.  Could have been due to the board bowing as you cut it.

But more than likely, it can happen when you stop or slow the saw progress in the middle of the cut.  The blade against the wood heats it up.  So you might watch that.  Router bits are notorious for burning Cherry so you always want to try to keep the router moving to prevent it, particularly apparent on bearing guided bits on the edge of cherry.

Pick up a wood scraper and burnisher.  It's a great tool for removing burn marks.  Your sander will also do it as it looks like you found out.

Congrats on the second table.  And Bob's a great guy.  Glad you found him as he'll be a great resource on tool decisions.

what a 2nd MFT already??????

Oh brother you drank the green kool aid and are on the slippery slope now.

We do have a 12 step program for the members here  [big grin]

I find the 2 MFTs are great together. I have 3.

You'll need to pick up a couple of flag stops for it to.

Have you bought the MFT connectors?

They help align and join the MFTs together.

Cherry is known for burning. Nature of the beast for that species

Thats a nice Ts55 saw stand you made well done. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, you two! Yes... I have indeed. I think I am almost done for now though (famous last words).

Yeah really looking forward to it! I did indeed get a second flag stop, Bob was out of the connectors though.

I actually got a little more too...here's my (most recent) order.

Matt

Looks great! My wife likes to say that woodworking is a great cover story for the real addiction that is tool collecting. Welcome to the party😊. Regarding the burning keep in mind that A. Cherry is very prone to burning so the basics like using the proper blade for the job and having a really smooth consistent feed rate just becomes a little more important than usual B. Burning is generally caused by the blade getting out of perfect parallel with the cut so with the track saw really watch your body positioning over and through the cut as well as your hand pressure especially as you complete the cut. BTW, anybody that cuts enough Cherry burns some. Personally I love woods like Cherry that challenge my technique, they are just a reminder to focus. Again, great job.

You can avoid burn marks by cutting in multiple passes (shallow to full depth plus). That way you gradually release the tension in the wood. Make this cut to oversize and do a clean up cut to get to final size (multiple pass may result in uneven edge).

I use this method for ripping and crosscutting rough stock and it has proven itself (at least to me…).
